Anderson Complex Daily Update for August 05, 2023

Anderson Complex
Publication Type: News 08/12/2023

Red Flag conditions forecast for Anderson Complex today, tomorrow

WEATHER: The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning beginning at noon today and lasting through Sunday night. A Red Flag Warning is issued when low humidity, high temperatures, and strong winds are expected to combine to cause fires to spread rapidly. Over the next two days temperatures are expected to be in the high 80s to low 90s with low humidity and Chinook winds with sustained speeds of 20 to 30 mph out of the south.

FIRE UPDATE: Firefighters have been preparing for the past several days for this weekend’s weather. They have worked tirelessly to protect structures and allotments from the three fires that remain active in the Anderson Complex – the Teklanika River Fire (#257), Birch Creek Fire (#285), and the Shores Landing Fire (#325), previously known as the Pilot Spot Fire.

The Midnight Sun Hotshots and Lassen Hotshots in the Teklanika Group took advantage of less active fire behavior yesterday to continue clearing brush and setting up pumps, hoses, and sprinklers to protect structures and allotments along the Teklanika River. Both crews will continue this work today. They plan to turn on pumps and sprinklers if the fire begins to move toward the structures, then move to a safety zone the crews have identified.

Work on the fuel breaks around the City of Anderson is almost finished with a few improvements expected to take place today. A masticator will be used to clean up the newly constructed fuel break south of Anderson and north of Clear Space Force Station. Once the fuel breaks are complete, firefighters assigned to the Anderson Group will remain in and around the city to provide structure protection in the event fire moves toward the community. These crews include wildland firefighters from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) and Kenai and several heavy equipment operators.

Wildland firefighters from Clear Space Force Station are assigned to the Clear Group. They are continuing to work with the Anderson Group to finish the fuel break north of the station.

Engine crews from Nenana and McKinley are working with the Nulato Hills Wildland hand crew and a dozer in the Nenana Group. They are focused on structure protection in Nenana and the subdivisions south of Nenana on the Parks Highway.

In the Birch Group, the Shasta Lake Hotshots finished clearing brush from around structures and setting up pumps, hoses and sprinklers in the Clear Sky homestead and Rose Hip Creek area yesterday. Crew members plan to turn on the pumps to start the sprinklers in the event the Birch Creek Fire begins to advance on the structures. Then they will move to a safety zone they have identified.

Firefighters from Kobe, Anderson, Northstar, the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire and the K River 1 hand crew are assigned to the Kobe Group today. They are responsible for structure protection in the North Forties and Kobe Ag subdivisions. They continue clearing brush; installing pumps, hoses and sprinklers; and working to reopen a dozer line north of the North Forties that was put in during the 2022 Clear Fire. They have also identified a two-track road that will be improved to serve as a contingency line.

Finally, the Parks Highway Group is tasked with assessing structures along the highway corridor and determining how best to protect them. The group is working from Tri-Valley to Nenana looking at options for protecting structures and the highway itself from the Birch Creek, Teklanika River and Shores Landing fires.

The Anderson Complex includes the Teklanika River Fire (#257), Birch Creek Fire (#285), Shores Landing Fire (#325), Kobe Road Fire (#297), Nenana River Fire (#288), and Nenana River Fire 2 (#289). The Kobe Road fire is contained and controlled. The Nenana River and Nenana River 2 fires have shown minimal activity for more than a week.

EVACUATION STATUS: The Teklanika River and all residents along the Teklanika River, and all residents in Clear Sky homestead (not the Clear Sky Lodge) and residents adjacent to Rose Hip Creek are in Evacuation Status GO. Individuals in this area should evacuate now. Do not delay. The Tri-Valley School is available for evacuation parking and will be available as an evacuation center, if needed.

The City of Anderson and all residents that use any road west of the George Parks Highway between milepost 270 and the Rex Bridge are in Evacuation Status SET. Individuals in this area should be ready in a moment’s notice.

The City of Nenana, residents who access their property off the George Parks Highway corridor between milepost 288 and milepost 306, and residents who access their property from the west side of the George Parks Highway between milepost 266 and milepost 270, including June Creek and Bear Creek, are in Evacuation Status READY. Individuals in this area should be ready for possible evacuation.
