Publication Type: Announcement 06/22/2023

This is a brief operational update on the Stanislaus National Forest Prescribed Fire Projects for the evening of June 21, 2023.

Firefighters were able to continue burning on the Stanislaus National Forest Rx Burn Projects today. In the Strawberry Prescribed Burn Project, the S07, S08, and WS5 units were completed. A fully engulfed tree was found outside of the units that was determined to be lightning caused.

Crabtree Road will be closed from Highway 108 to the intersection of Forest Road4N26 and 4N11 until the nearby units on the Strawberry Prescribed Burn Project are completed. Firing operations are anticipated to continue tomorrow, Thursday, June 22nd in units S05, CS5, and possibly WS4 (see map for reference). As these operations continue, smoke may impact the communities of Strawberry and Pinecrest as well as Highway 108. Drivers in this area are urged to use caution, drive slowly with lights on. Individuals sensitive to smoke need to be aware that the air may be at unhealthy levels for several hours over the next couple days.

In the Dry Meadow Prescribed Burn Project, unit DM74 was completed today. Tomorrow, firefighters will look to burn unit DM48.

Cloud cover is anticipated to increase tomorrow, as well as relative humidity levels. After this weekend, a period of warmer and drier weather will move into the area.

There are a total of 490 firefighters working on these Prescribed Fire Project areas. To date, a total of 3,232 acres of prescribed burning has occurred in this area of the forest.
