Smoke Outlook for Central Sierra and Greater Tahoe Area, Mosquito Fire (Monday, 09-19-22)
Fire
The fire is currently over 76,000 acres. With about 0.1 to 0.2 inches of rain over the fire area, firefighters were again able to make more progress on the firelines, bringing containment to 39%. Another inch or more of rain is forecasted for today and tomorrow, which is expected to substantially limit further perimeter growth for the next couple days. Smoke production will likely be limited to smoldering within the fire perimeter.
Smoke
Yesterday’s smoke again pushed mostly NE toward Portola, leaving the rest of the forecast area with Good air quality. Today, those smoldering emissions are likely to accumulate more towards Chico and the foothills north and west of the fire. Tomorrow, winds will again switch toward the NE by afternoon, bringing the possibility of moderate-level smoke accumulation in the Truckee/Portola areas. Tomorrow’s rain and clouds will continue to wash much of the smoke out of the air, so these impacts, if any, should be moderate and transient.
