The Mosquito Fire remains in unified command with California Interagency Incident Management Team 5, CAL FIRE, Placer County Sheriff, and El Dorado County Sheriff. 

CURRENT SITUATION

Due to the Mosquito Fire continuing to hold within its existing containment lines on the southern and western flanks, a large number of evacuation orders have been lifted this afternoon. Along with the diligent work by firefighters to secure containment lines on these fronts, Unified Command staff have been working constantly with cooperators to ensure that these communities were safe for repopulation. Both Placer and El Dorado County Sheriff Offices’ issued evacuation order reductions today to allow more people back in their homes.

 

Today, significant amounts of wetting rain covered the fire area due to the storm system holding in the region. Threats of isolated thunderstorms today has remained a concern and firefighters have remained vigilant during these changing weather conditions. Fire behavior was minimized today due to the cooler temperatures, rain showers, and higher humidity. The fuels in the area remain critically dry and small smoke columns from hot spots were visible within the fire’s perimeter this afternoon during periods of passing clouds and sunshine. Firefighters continued constructing direct control lines along the fire’s eastern edge by utilizing hand tools and dozers. Crews are taking advantage of the subdued fire activity to bring primary control lines right up to the fire’s edge. Firefighters worked aggressively in the area below Deadwood Road and the North Fork of the Middle Fork of the American River to construct more control lines and continue the efforts of increasing containment. Crews continued holding the fire along Eleven Pines Road and continued implementing direct control lines down through McCulloh, Devil’s Peak and into Stumpy Meadows. Crews are continuing efforts to cross the Rubicon River drainage and fully secure the southeast corner of the fire.

 

With continued rain forecasted overnight, throughout Tuesday, and tapering off Wednesday, firefighters will continue looking for opportunities to construct direct control lines to stop the fire’s growth and increase containment. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for the fire area due to the potential for ash and debris flows associated with forecasted thunderstorms. The public should continue monitoring the changing fire and weather conditions over the coming days.

EVACUATION CENTERS

Placer County:

·       Sierra College, 5100 Sierra College Blvd., Rocklin, California. Enter on Rocklin Road for parking, which is in Lot B. Shelter is in cafeteria (building J).

El Dorado County:

·       Cameron Park Services District, 2502 Country Club Drive, Cameron Park, California. Overnight shelter with meals, showers, limited health services, and parking for trailers. Animals in crates and carriers are allowed.

·       Green Valley Community Church, 3500 Missouri Flat Road, Placerville, California. RV parking is limited and no hookups. Small domestic animals in crates or on leashes are allowed (no large animals or birds).
