Middle Fork Complex Daily Update for Saturday, 09-07-2024

Middle Fork Complex Fire: Bulldog and Nellie
Publication Type: News - 09/07/2024 - 09:55

Increased Completion in Anderson Creek Area

The Middle Fork Complex is 58,351 acres with 29% completion. There are currently 773 personnel assigned to the fire, including 17 hand crews, 37 engines, and 4 helicopters. The inversion and trapped valley smoke will remain through much of the afternoon today, in addition to high-level cloud cover moving in from the southwest. High temperatures will still be well above normal in the 80s and 90s with afternoon clouds building over the area. There is a slight chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms late overnight. Visit https://www.airnow.gov/wildfires/ for smoke information.

Crews continue indirect fireline construction on the northwest side of the Bulldog Fire, from Rattlesnake Trail to Lodgepole Campground. Crews are holding and patrolling the fireline along the 698 Road corridor. Crews continue to do fuels mitigation and install water pumps and hoses in and around structures in the Silver Creek Lodge area.  The crew mitigating fuels in the Silver Creek Lookout area completed their work yesterday. They will be working in the Whitehawk Mountain Lookout area today. An Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) module scouted the fire edges between Nellie and Bulldog yesterday. Those edges saw more heat and activity when the inversion lifted in the afternoon. Crews continue to improve the indirect fireline from the Nellie Fire to the southwest corner of the Bulldog Fire as a potential fireline for the fire if the two footprints burn together.

Crews continue to mop up and backhaul unneeded hose and pumps from the dozer and handline on the southwest side of the Nellie Fire. More completion is on the map today on that southwest flank. Crews continue to patrol the Highway 17 corridor and wildfire suppression repair is beginning in that area. The fire continues to make minimal progress on the east side of the fire where it abuts against the old Pioneer Fire burn scar.

Below Whitehawk Mountain, crews and equipment are improving access along the 510 Road and building direct line to engage the spots on the northeast edge of the Nellie Fire perimeter. Hand crews are also constructing direct fireline to the north end of the Nellie Fire using the 591 Road to tie into the 2016 Pioneer burn scar.

Mop-up continues in the Deadwood Reservoir dam area. Dozers are constructing dozer line on the western side of the fire, south of Deadwood Reservoir, to help secure fire edge into the Rattlesnake burn scar. Crews clearing snags on the 555 Road have completed their work and suppression repair is beginning along that route as well.

Boise National Forest Closure Order Number 0402-06-60 remains in effect. An interactive forest closure map is available on the Boise National Forest Alerts & Closures website, https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/boise/alerts-notices

Highway 21 is closed from the Sourdough Lodge in Lowman to Stanley (MP 84 to 130) due to wildfire activity. Only local traffic is allowed between the Sourdough Lodge and Warm Springs Airstrip. For more information, visit the Idaho Department of Transportation website, https://511.idaho.gov/

Wildfires are a No Drone Zone. If you fly, we can’t. Every time a drone is spotted near the fire all aircraft are grounded until we can be sure the drone is clear of this area.  Visit Know Before You Fly, http://knowbeforeyoufly.org. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in effect in the fire area.
