Northwest Team 6 will continue with strategic management of the five fires in the area. In addition to the two fires listed in this update NW Team 6 is managing the Brice, Dinner, and Grizzly Fires further north on the Umpqua National Forest.
Chilcoot Fire: Size: 1,769 acres | Start Date: August 24, 2023 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 45%
Yesterday, due to drier weather, crews saw new areas putting up smoke. These smokes are well within the Chilcoot Fire perimeter and are not expected to threaten control lines. Firefighters will be extinguishing hot spots 150 feet into the fire perimeter to prevent fire growth as the weather continues to dry out. Aviation will also be used to support crews on the ground. The contingency group is working on chipping, reducing fuels on roads.
Ridge Fire: Size: 219 acres | Start Date: August 25, 2023 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 95%
Firefighters are gridding the open piece of line in the north and mopping up hot spots ensuring the fire does not spread. Gridding is when firefighters walk in an organized line to look for and extinguish any hot spots within the fire perimeter.
Weather: Hot, dry, and unstable weather will continue the next few days increasing potential for fire activity, but winds will remain light.
Smoke: Smoke outlooks are available at https://outlooks.wildlandfiresmoke.net/outlook/467b8c16?
Safety and Closures: There is a forest closure for portions of the Umpqua National Forest in response to fire activity in the area to protect public and wildland firefighter safety. A Closure Order for the Canton Creek area has been issued by Bureau of Land Management (BLM): Chilcoot Ridge Fire Emergency Closure Order BLM Roseburg District. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction over these fires.
