Current Situation: Weather caused the fire to be active yesterday. As the inversion lifted in the afternoon, it opened the atmosphere allowing increased airflow, combined with hot and dry conditions, fire behavior increased. Activity is expected to be less today because the atmosphere is anticipated to be more stable. Smoke will continue to be visible in nearby communities. Today’s Activities: Firefighters are preparing hand dug fireline connecting it to a road near Alice Creek on the west side of the fire. This handline will allow firefighters to consider igniting vegetation between them and where the fire is burning. Burning back into the fire consumes burnable vegetation and allows firefighters to have more control over where the fire can burn. This strategy is being used to allow firefighters to identify safe access points where they can still suppress the fire. Chipping continues in the northwest alternate lines of the fire with plans to move south as work is completed. Crews are also working on enhancing firelines by removing trees and other impeding vegetation near the Koch Mountain and the Waldo Lake side of the fire. On the west side of Black Creek, firefighters are working on connecting the north end of the fire-retardant line to handline.
The Slapjack Fire work has been completed and the local agency will be taking over management of the fire. This will be the last update on this fire.
Evacuations: Lane County Sheriff’s Office has initiated a Level 1, Be Ready Evacuation, for North Waldo Campground, Islet Campground, and Charlton Lake Trail Head. Level 1, means to take personal responsibility to be ready for a wildfire, become familiar with area roads, including exit routes from your immediate area, and stay informed of the current situation. Pay attention to Lane County Sheriff’s Office for updates.
Weather: Hot, and dry conditions with temperatures in the upper 90s. Humidity below 20%.
Closures: An expanded Area Closure is in place as of August 23rd for the Cedar Creek Fire. This includes all trailheads and dispersed camping west and north of Waldo Lake. The lake, campgrounds, and trails (including the PCT) on the east side remain open. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place.
Restrictions: Fire restrictions are in place on the Willamette National Forest with the exception of the Three Sisters, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington, Waldo Lake, and Diamond Peak Wilderness areas.
