OtherThe Greer Fire started approximately 11am within Greer proper on the west side of County Road 1120. The wind-driven fire is pushing to the east/northeast along the ridges through grass and pinyon-juniper toward the community of South Fork. Gusts up to 65mph hit the fire this afternoon. Large Air Tankers were ordered at the initial start of the fire, but due to the high winds that aircraft had to be grounded.
Resources have the heel of the fire anchored in and lines are currently holding. Crews are now engaged on the west and east flanks working on establishing containment lines. The east side of the fire is sitting above South Fork within some bluffs and inaccessible. In addition, resources are providing structure protection to homes in the area of the fire and ahead of the fire. An Infrared Flight mapped the fire at 3,500 acres.
Per the Apache County Office of Emergency Management, Multiple areas are in GO with some in SET.
GO: Greer, South Fork, and residents west of Highway 261
SET: River Road in Eagar west to Highway 261
A shelter is open in St. Johns at the County Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds has the capacity to house small and large animals.
