A fire crew is constructing direct fire line on the northwest edge of the Hurdy Gurdy Fire on August 29, 2023. They are building a hand line, cutting brush and down wood, then digging down through the duff to mineral soil. This creates a gap in fuels to stop the fire from spreading. Direct line construction can be used in light to moderate fuels when the slopes and winds align, where the fire is unlikely to be pushed across the hand line.
The AAA Thunderbolt engine is guarding against fire crossing the line during an evening tactical firing operation on August 28. The Beckwourth Hot Shots in the background are doing the firing operations, helping secure fire lines near the south tip of the Kelly Fire.
A member of the Rapid Extraction Module Support (REMS) team assigned to Division MM on the southeast edge of the Smith River Complex practices rope skills. REMS provide medical assistance in remote areas of fires. They have equipment and skills to work on rugged ground where many firefighters work. They assess, stabilize, and extract patients from remote areas, and transport them to a location an ambulance or medical helicopter can reach.
