It's like "Where's Waldo?" but "Where's the firefighter?" If you look hard enough, you can spot a firefighter in this photo. This firefighter's job is called a "lookout." A lookout is a firefighter designated to detect and report changes in wildfire activity (and/or new fires) from a specific vantage point. They also sometimes take weather observations to help their fellow firefighters anticipate changes in fire behavior. Lookouts play a critical role regarding firefighter safety, and crews and engines couldn't do their jobs safely without them! Photo credit: Mistie K. Bucich; Photo Taken September 13, 2023

Recent weather brought a warming and drying trend to the area, which increased fire activity in some portions of the Chilcoot Fire. Air operations increased accordingly. While smoke increased and is expected to persist through the weekend, there was no significant growth on the fire yesterday despite this change in weather. Photo taken September 15, 2023.
