Local Assistance & Disaster Resource Centers for Impacted Residents Open Tuesday, January 14

Local Assistance & Disaster Resource Centers will open to the public on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 8:00PM. Starting Wednesday, January 15, 2025, the Disaster Resource Centers will be available to the public from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

The Horton Fire transitioned to a local Type 3 team this morning.
Horton Fire Update: January 13, 2025

Highlights: Operations continue as management of the fire transitioned to a Type 3 team with the Tonto National Forest this morning at 7:00 a.m. Yesterday, crews strengthened containment lines to a depth of nearly 200 feet along the powerline corridor. Mop up and suppression repair work continues throughout the fire effected area. The Forest closure order has been updated.

Operations: Today, crews will work on backhauling excess equipment and suppression repair throughout all areas. Graders will be used to make improvements on the roads effected by fire suppression activities. Along the southern perimeter of the containment line, crews will work to clear snags along roads and trails that could pose a threat to the public. Work continues along SR-260 and travelers are encouraged to be mindful of fire traffic throughout the day.

Weather: Light winds and cool temperatures are expected to continue for the next few days. Conditions on the rim will be colder and gustier than at the lower elevations.
Smoke: Smoke will continue to be visible in the area as pockets of vegetation burn well within the interior of the fire footprint. For more information visit https://outlooks.wildlandfiresmoke.net/outlook/.

TFR: A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR 5/1983) is in place for the Horton Fire through January 31. More information is available at https://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_5_1983.html. Intruding the flight restriction area puts firefighter safety and operations at risk.
Evacuations: As of January 10, 2025, all communities have returned to the READY evacuation status. The health and safety of firefighters and the public are always the priority. Forest Orders: As of January 13, 2025, the forest closure order has been revised and reduced to reflect current conditions. Forest Order 03-12-00-25-02 is in place to protect public health and safety during the Horton Fire as well as protecting firefighting personnel engaging in wildland firefighting operations. Current Situation: Last night, firefighters continued active patrol and mop up, mitigating smoke and heat sources. Minimal fire activity was observed overnight, with smoldering and creeping. Individual pockets of unburned fuel continued to present challenges. A mobile retardant base has been set up at Mount Wilson to support air operations. Urban Search and Rescue efforts, infrastructure assessments, hazardous material response, and damage assessment operations continue in the communities along the southern edge of the fire. These operations are unprecedented in size and scale which are critical for mitigating existing hazards, confirming missing persons reports, and obtaining accurate number of structures loss.

Damage Assessment: Damage estimates from remote sensing technologies indicate over 7,000 structures may have been damaged or destroyed. While this is a preliminary estimate, the number of structures damaged and destroyed listed at the top of this page have been verified by on-the-ground damage inspection teams. Damage inspection teams have completed inspections of 26% of all structures within the fire footprint.

Current Situation:

Containment rises to 89% as firefighters continue to work towards full containment. The remaining 11% of the fire control line is located on the northern edge of the fire, in extremely steep and difficult terrain.

At 7:00 A.M., management of the fire transitioned to the U.S. Forest Service, from Unified Command that included the Los Angeles Fire Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department, CAL Fire and the U.S. Forest Service, Angeles National Forest.

The Los Angeles Police Department will continue to maintain a presence in the area to support fire operations.

The Angeles National Forest remains closed to all uses through Wednesday January 15, 2025, due to critical fire danger.

Highlights: Suppression repair work continues, as personnel downsize in preparation of transferring management of the fire back to a Type 3 team from the Tonto National Forest at 0700 on January 13, 2025. As of last night, AZ Department of Transportation removed the lane restrictions on SR-260. The increase in fire acreage is due to more accurate mapping. Crews will continue to search for areas of hot spots to ensure nothing escapes the containment lines.

Operations: Yesterday, firefighters connected the containment line between Christopher Creek and SR-260. Suppression repair work has been completed in the Christopher Creek area and will continue in surrounding areas today. Mop up along SR-260 is ongoing, and it is expected that smoke will continue to be seen along the highway. As operations downsize, firefighters will patrol and monitor the Horton Fire while working on additional suppression repair priorities.

Today, minimal fire growth is expected with continued smoldering and creeping. Burned structures and heavy fuels will continue to hold heat. In addition to perimeter control, crews will work to mitigate hazard trees along roadways to provide safety for firefighters and the public.

The unified command and the Los Angeles Police Department have lifted the Evacuation Warning for all areas impacted by the Hurst Fire. Fire officials reviewing current conditions, and fire control lines have determined that the immediate fire threat has eliminated.
