This week firefighters on the Grindstone Ranger District are attempting pile burning on up to 27 acres at Board Tree Camp, located in Glenn County off County Road 312.  Firefighters will also attempt burning piles at the Chico Seed Orchard, potentially 8 acres.

The Upper Lake and Covelo Districts have cancelled planned prescribed burn operations due to limited staffing and low relative humidity. In the coming weeks, as weather conditions and staffing allow, Upper Lake and Covelo Ranger District firefighters will attempt to burn piles along roadsides on the M1 Road North and South. Larimer County, Canyon Lakes Ranger District - Week of Dec 3 to Dec 9, 2024

Fire managers plan to burn piles on Canyon Lakes Ranger District starting as early as tomorrow, Tuesday Dec 3, if conditions allow. The potential units planned for this week are as follows:

Chicken Park: Hand piles. 2.5 miles northeast of Crystal Lakes subdivision along roads FSR 180C, 181 and 181B.

Cow Creek: Machine piles. 4 miles west of Crystal Lakes subdivision at the intersection of FSR 169 (Pearl Beaver Road) and FSR 199.

Elkhorn 3: Machine piles. 3 miles southwest of Red Feather Lakes and west along FSR 517 (Bald Mountain Road).

Devils Creek Blowdown: Hand piles. 5 miles north of Crystal Lakes subdivision; at the intersection of County Road 80C and FSR 182.

Pierson Park: Hand piles. 3.5 miles southeast of Estes Park along Pierson Park Road and Johnny Park Road.

These are the only locations currently planned for Canyon Lakes Ranger District pile burning during this timeframe. A new update will be posted if any new units are planned. 

Horseshoe Fire Update

Current Situation:

Thanks to the great work of firefighters and recent precipitation in the area, the Horseshoe Fire is now at 95% containment and has stayed within its current footprint. 

Rocks and boulders have fallen onto Horseshoe Meadow Road along with snow, so firefighters will not be able to work safely past Carroll Creek area. However, they will still patrol as far up the road as they can and engage whenever possible. They will also stage resources along Lubken Canyon Road while Inyo County road crews remove hazards from the roadways when possible.

Heavy equipment has arrived to engage in suppression line repair wherever possible, but likely won’t be at this time due to the rain and snow activity.

Evacuation orders and warnings remain unchanged.

Grand County, Sulphur Ranger District - Week of Nov 26 to Dec 2, 2024

Fire managers continue to monitor conditions for pile burning in Sulphur Ranger District, with the next possibile ignitions window starting on Monday, December 2, in the following Grand County locations:

Fair Unit: Hand and Machine piles, located near Fair Tracts, east of Tabernash along Water Board Road (FSR 128).

Note: Several sections of the Fair Unit were already burned the week of November 12th.

Shadow Mountain Village: Hand piles, located in Grand Lake near the Shadow Mountain Picnic Area.

Strawberry Unit: Hand piles, located 3.5 miles west of Granby, near BLM Road 2751.

These are the only locations currently planned for pile burning during this timeframe. A new update will be posted the week of Dec 2 if any new units are planned. 

Seeley Lake Ranger District: Firefighters will burn up to 3 acres of piles located 2 miles northwest of Seeley Lake, pending conditions. Smoke may be visible from Highway 83 and Seeley Lake.

Horseshoe Fire Update

Current Situation:

Firefighters were very successful in constructing and verifying containment lines yesterday, making great progress before the incoming storm. With the more accurate mapping available and ground-truthing, the fire has been mapped at 4,530 acres and is now 61 percent contained. There has been no new growth on this fire. 

Although the incoming storm system is helping extinguish this fire with rain and snow, it also presents different firefighting challenges and safety hazards, especially in Carroll Creek.

For this reason, evacuation orders in the Horseshoe area (Zone 223A) will remain in place and Lubken Canyon (Zone 195 and 197) will be downgraded to a warning due to the potential for debris flows. However, evacuations warnings were lifted for the Alabama Hills area (Zone 193), Lone Pine Mobile Oasis/Foothill Trailer Park (Zone 207), and Boulder Creek (Zone 211). The evacuation advisory was also lifted for the Granite View area (Zone 223C).

Firefighters will continue attacking this fire aggressively where possible, and not in the path of debris flows dangers. Inyo County Public Works department is working with involved cooperators to ensure road-clearing equipment is staged for this purpose.

Demobilization of resources is in progress for this incident, however the remaining resources will continue with mopping up and gaining containment on this fire, along with suppression line repair.

Current Situation:

Firefighters worked overnight to further the work of initial attack resources and secure containment lines up to 10 percent of the Horseshoe Fire’s perimeter. There has been no new significant growth on this fire, as the winds have died down substantially. Although fire weather is predicted to be calmer than yesterday, firefighters are not letting their guard down and will continue attacking this fire aggressively with all resources available. 

Firefighters were successful in constructing containment lines all along the eastern edge of the fire, and will continue in their progress moving uphill on the northern and southern edges of the fire’s perimeter. The most challenging area of the fire remains on the western edge in the steepest terrain. Here, it is not possible to insert firefighters on the ground so operations will be focusing air resources here, such as helicopters and air tankers if necessary. 

The damage assessment team has determined that two homes and six outbuildings were destroyed in this fire, and three outbuildings were damaged, all located within the De La Cour Ranch.

Evacuations have not changed since yesterday.

Current Situation:

The Horseshoe Fire exhibited moderate to high intensity behavior due to the erratic and strong winds, at times gusting in excess of 65 miles per hour. Despite these conditions, firefighters were able to make great progress in constructing containment lines on the north, east, and south flanks of the fire.  The steepest elevations along the western flank continue to be the most active area of this fire.  

Evacuations have not changed since this morning.

A helicopter worked to drop water where possible, but was grounded in the afternoon due to the high winds along with other air attack attempting to gain more intelligence on the fire’s activity and size. Tomorrow morning air resources will attempt again with more favorable conditions in the forecast.

A damage assessment team has been ordered for this incident.
