CURRENT SITUATION
Current Situation:
Fresno County: SOUTH ZONE
Overnight fire activity in the South Zone of the Creek Fire did not significantly increase the existing fire perimeter. Areas of the fire experiencing the most activity was south of Mount Tom and the most eastern portion of the South Zone east of China Peak. There may be movement in alignment with the change in weather and terrain driven winds towards the Ansel Adams Wilderness.
Firing operations may take place on the northeastern portions of the South Zone in the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River. If this occurs it will be within control lines and anyone in the area may see smoke rising from the fire. In general, the fire will smolder within the existing perimeter in heavier fuels such as timber and dense fuel beds in the southern portions of the fire near Burrough Mountain and Sycamore Canyon.,
Operationally, fire resources will perform tactical patrol near the fire perimeter mopping up hot spots and ensuring structures are prepared for defense in the event the fire approaches communities. Containment remains a priority, and handcrews will be deployed in areas where heavy equipment (i.e. bulldozers) cannot be utilized due to challenging terrain.
Madera County: NORTH ZONE
Weather conditions are changing with a high-pressure system moving across the area. This shifts winds to the northeast along ridgetops and upper slopes producing a light to moderate down-sloping wind. Temperatures are also expected to climb starting today and into next week and return day-time high temperatures to the 90’s. Expect smoke conditions to increase along the Highway 41 Corridor.
Crews working in the Central Camp and Whiskey Falls area have finished the firing operations and they are now in patrol and monitor status. The military support there was a great success. The hazards in the area are the dead trees that are falling in that area. Crews will remain in those areas and Cascadel Woods to strengthen containment.
Areas of active fire are east of Chiquito Creek and the 5S04 road and east of Beasore Meadow and south to Central Camp Road.
At its closest distance, the fire was measured to be about 10-12 miles west of Mammoth Lakes. The visual inspection verified that the natural barriers and the previous Lions fire (2017) burn scar do appear to be limiting fire spread in the north-eastern flank. Conditions continue to be monitored very closely by emergency officials. Additional information is available via the Sierra National Forest Facebook page, or the below link:

Once again, with the increased use of air resources, please respect the Temporary Flight Restriction. The use of drones is not permitted over the fire area. A drone incursion will result in the grounding of all firefighting aircraft. Remember, "If you fly - We can't

CURRENT SITUATION
Current Situation:
Fresno County: SOUTH ZONE
Active burning was once again observed on the South Zone of the Creek Fire overnight with some timber torching and short range spotting. Heavier fuels (timber) and dense fuel beds will smolder for an extended period of time.
There was moderate humidity recovery overnight and downslope winds were felt within the fire. Smoke that has settled in low lying areas will struggle to mix out of the area due to light winds today. Beginning today, a weather system bringing higher and hot temperatures arrives in the region with lower humidities. This will last into next week.
Areas where fire behavior will be most active will be south of Mount Tom towards the Portal Forebay and east towards the Dinkey Lakes Wildnerness. Operational priorities for fire resources on the South Zone of the Creek Fire will be ensuring mopup near the existing fire perimeter helps hold containment. Personnel will also work to improve and build remaining containment lines, and provide tactical patrol including the extinguishment of hot spots and preparing any threatened structures for defense.
Madera County: NORTH ZONE
Weather conditions will change with a high-pressure system moving across the area starting tonight. This will shift winds to the northeast which will produce a light to moderate down-sloping wind. Temperatures are also expected to climb starting Sunday and into next week and return day-time high temperatures to the 90’s. Expect smoke conditions to increase along the 41 Road Corridor.
Yesterday Air Operations successfully used the aerial ignition device dispensed by helicopter in the Whiskey Falls area. This devise is called a PSD (plastic sphere dispenser), it is a compact and dependable aerial ignition devise used in areas that are too dangerous for firefighters. The hazards in the area are the dead trees that are falling in that area. The tactical back-burning in the areas of Central Camp and Whiskey Falls was finished last night and crews will remain in the area to strengthen and work toward containment.
The Marines are supporting the firefighting efforts in the Cascadel and Central Camp areas.
With the change in anticipated wind direction to a northeast flow due to a high-pressure system moving into the area, all helicopters are now based at the Mammoth Lakes Airport. This relocation is not a result of any increased threat of fire progression.
At its closest distance, the fire was measured to be about 10-12 miles west of Mammoth Lakes. The visual inspection verified that the natural barriers and the previous Lions fire (2017) burn scar do appear to be limiting fire spread in the north-eastern flank. CURRENT SITUATION
Current Situation:
Fresno County: The fire burned actively overnight in the northern portion of the Creek Fire’s South Zone. It made short runs in the dry overnight air which had poor moisture recovery, leading to single and group tree torching and was within the interior of the existing fire perimeter.
Smoke has settled back into drainages and canyons with the light winds resulting in limited dissipation of the smoke. Hot temperatures this weekend will lead to more drying of fuels allowing them to increase their ability to ignite and carry combustion, and winds will begin to come from the North, opposite of the past few days.
The fire will progress south of Mounty Tom and could reach the Portal Forebay, while on the eastern side of the fire it will progress towards the Dinkey Lake Wilderness and Florence Lake. Operational priorities are the improvement and building of containment line.
Tactical patrol will be conducted in all areas of the fire with a focus on mopping up near the perimeter and ensuring threatened structures are able to be defended should the fire run towards them.
Madera County: Weather conditions will change with a high-pressure system moving across the area starting Saturday. This will shift winds to the northeast which will produce a light to moderate down-sloping wind. Temperatures are also expected to climb this weekend into next week and return day-time high temperatures to temperatures in the 90’s in the lower elevations of the south and west areas of the fire. Expect smoke conditions to increase along the 41 Road Corridor.
Air Operations will assist firefighters today, weather permitting, with an aerial ignition device dispensed by helicopter. This devise is called a PSD (plastic sphere dispenser), it is a compact and dependable aerial ignition devise used in areas that are too dangerous for firefighters. The hazards in the area are the dead trees that are falling in that area. A Cobra helicopter will scan the area with an infrared camera to capture any hot spots not visible. With effective air support firefighting crews once again were able to aggressively back-burn problematic areas and continue to work towards extending the containment line north of Peckinpah Meadows.
Today the Mariposa Heli-base will terminate firefighting operations, and all helicopters based there will relocate to Mammoth Lakes Airport. This relocation is in response to the expected northeast winds with the high-pressure system moving into the area this weekend, and not a result of any increased threat of fire progression.
Fresno County: The fire actively burned south of Mount Tom and progressed towards Portal Forebay while actively burning and torching in the trees. Eastern portions of the fire are flanking to the east and the southern portion of the fire continues is burning with some short-range spotting. The low humidity overnight assisted to completely consume fuels within the burn perimeter, burning out interior islands.
Humidity recoveries were at best moderate and poor in other areas overnight with clear skies and relatively light winds. Smoke has settled back into the lower drainages and canyons again and will be dense for some locations. Sunny skies are again expected Thursday along with season temperatures and humidity, followed by the potential for record heat this weekend which is likely to increase fire behavior.
The fire will progress south and could reach the Portal Forebay while eastern portions of the fire will continue to progress to the east towards Dinkey Lake Wilderness. The southern portion of the fire should completely burn out to control lines as intended as part of the firing operation. Fire progression will slow as fuels become reduced in the high higher elevation rock while it will smolder in the heavier fuels.
Completing containment remains a priority in the South Zone of the Creek Fire though the use of heavy equipment and hand crews. Other fire personnel will focus on tactical patrol, including mop up of hot spots near and within the fire perimeter and preparing structure defense within threatened areas.
Madera County: Weather conditions will continue as they have been until this weekend. A high-pressure system will move across the northern part of the West Coast. This will shift winds to the northeast which will produce a light to moderate down-sloping wind. Temperatures are also expected to climb this weekend into next week and return day-time high temperatures to near 100 degrees in the lower elevations of the south and west areas of the fire. Expect smoke conditions to increase along the 41 Road Corridor.
Air Operations were delayed yesterday due to smoke conditions early in the day. However, during the afternoon, helicopters resumed water-drops along the Central Camp contingency lines, and in the area between Globe Rock and Little Shuteye Peak. With effective air support firefighting crews once again were able to aggressively back-burn problematic areas and continue to work towards extending the containment line north of Peckinpah Meadows.
On Friday, the Mariposa Heli-base will terminate firefighting operations, and all helicopters based there will relocate to Mammoth Lakes. This relocation is in response to the expected northeast winds with the high-pressure system moving into the area this weekend, and not a result of any increased threat of fire progression.
At its closest distance, the fire was measured to be about 14 miles west of Mammoth Lakes. The visual inspection verified that the natural barriers and the previous burn scar do appear to be limiting fire spread in the north-eastern flank. Conditions continue to be monitored very closely by emergency officials. Additional information is available via the Sierra National Forest Facebook page, or the below link:

CURRENT SITUATION
Current Situation:
Fresno County: Active burning in the South Zone of the Creek Fire occurred during yesterday operational period south of Mount Tom progressing towards Portal Forebay. Active burning and torching occurred in heavy fuels and timber in this area. On the eastern portion of the fire progression was towards the east and on the south portion of the Zone it burned within control lines and consumed fuels interior to the existing perimeter.
Weather will follow the trend of season temperatures and low relative humidity with light winds, leading smoke to settle in the canyons and other low areas overnight into the morning with clearing by the midafternoon. Sunny skies will return Wednesday with little change in temperature or humidity and stabilize.
Fire progression may reach the Portal Forebay on the north portion of the Zone, and on the east portion of the fire it will progress towards the Dinkey Lake Wilderness. The southern portion of the fire should burn completely within and to the control lines from the burning operation. In high elevation areas with rock outcroppings, progression will slow.
Smoldering will continue in heavier fuel loads such as timber and areas with dense fuel beds.
Operational priorities for today on the South Zone will include tactical patrol in all areas.
Tactical patrol includes mopping up areas of the fire still exhibiting open flame, smoke and smoldering, and focusing on ensuring threatened structures are prepared for possible defense should the fire impact their communities. Additionally, line improvement and construction will remain a focus to improve containment of the fire with heavy equipment and hand crews removing additional fuels from areas around existing line.
Madera County: Weather conditions will continue to remain very consistent, possibly through the weekend. The alternating pattern of daytime up-sloping winds followed by nighttime down-sloping winds will be the dominant weather pattern. Fire crews have used this consistency and have implemented a very efficient routine and maximizing the use of air resources. Air Operations had a very busy day on the western perimeter of the fire near Central Camp. Helicopters performing water drops, and fixed wing aircraft dropping fire retardant along constructed dozer lines allowed for aggressive back-burning in this area. The fire has been brought around Central Camp utilizing these back burns, and confidence is high that this area will continue to be under control. Firefighters continue to patrol the cabins and to this point have protected the structures in this area.
Air reconnaissance was also used to visually survey the northern fire perimeter. After the fire spread last weekend over Beasore Road, this was the first opportunity to inspect the area including Granite Creek and Clover Meadows Camps. Fire preparations performed last week proved to be effective, and though the fire passed through these areas, the buildings in these camps were saved. Fire has also passed around Strawberry Mine, and the main buildings appear to be free of damage.

Once again, with the increased use of air resources, please respect the Temporary Flight Restriction. The use of drones is not permitted over the fire area. A drone incursion will result in the grounding of all firefighting aircraft. Remember, "If you fly - We can't."

CURRENT SITUATION
Current Situation:
Fresno County: Areas of the South Zone were active along the South Fork of the San Joaquin River as it progresses south along the solid rock rim of the drainage while on the eastern side of the fire burning is occurring towards the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness. Yesterday’s firing operation will continue to burn out in the Sycamore Creek drainage, as previously unburnt fuels become fully consumed, which provides assistance in containment. Around Portal Forebay the fire may move south.
Additional fire progression will be south of Mount Tom but slow as it reaches rocky higher elevation areas with less fuels. Areas with heavier fuels, such as dense beds of ground fuel and timer, will smolder.
Weather will influence fire activity as poor overnight moisture recovery leads to dry fuels. Light winds overnight allowed smoke to settle into the lower drainages and canyon, but overall sunny skies will prevail today allowing early preheating and drying of fuels. While smoke will rise and dissipate today, it will not completely clear out of the area.
Operational priorities for the South Zone of the Creek Fire remains enhancing containment with improvement of line and completion of the firing operation around Sycamore Creek. In other areas tactical patrol to mop-up the fire near the existing perimeter as well as to provide structure defense if needed is also a priority.
Madera County: Weather conditions encountered over the past 2 days will continue. Warm and dry air with southwest winds will continue. Daytime heating and southwest winds will continue to push the smoke upslope towards the Sierra Mountains. Nighttime cooling in the higher elevations will continue to push the smoke back down into the valleys with light down-sloping winds from the northeast. This reversing pattern of winds enables opportunities for effective back-burning operations during the afternoon but increases the danger of spot fires at night, especially in the area of Central Camp. Night shift fire crews have been very successful in holding the progress made during the daytime back burns. As the weather creates effective conditions for back-burns, it also allows for growth of the natural fire lines. Yesterday some flare-ups along the fire perimeter combined with back-burns created some very visible smoke columns during the afternoon. All of these areas were effectively controlled by late evening utilizing air resources.
Today the Military Strike Teams will be put into place along the fire perimeter to actively engage in firefighting operations. This will allow the opportunity to work aggressively and extend containment lines into the problematic areas along the western side of the Creek Fire. Increasing the amount of personnel around the fire area also creates more vehicular traffic. All fire personnel and residents should take this into consideration and use caution while driving on these increasingly traveled roads.
The northeastern fire perimeter is still about 12 miles west of Mammoth Lakes. Fire spread has been slowed as expected due to some natural barriers and the previous burn scar. Conditions continue to be monitored very closely by emergency officials. Please respect the Temporary Flight Restriction. The use of drones is not permitted over the fire area. A drone incursion will result in the grounding of all firefighting aircraft. Remember, "If you fly - We can't."
