The Meddler Fire continues to burn on the Tonto Basin Ranger District. The fire is burning in the Cherry Creek area off FS Road 203, 7 miles northeast of Roosevelt. The fire is burning in grass and light brush. More accurate mapping shows the fire at 3,400 acres, o% containment this evening.Firefighters are working to mitigate threats to 5 residences, 10 outbuildings, and 500kV powerlines. Structure prep work is being conducted in the Rockhouse Community, Dagger Ranch, and Coon Creek Ranch. There are no evacuations in effect for the Meddler Fire at this time. Firefighters worked through the evening to construct containment lines. A successful burnout operation helped to secure the west side of the fire last night. Visibility issues have hindered the safe use of aviation resources at times. Ground crews are working to suppress the fire and build containment lines where safe. Strong winds and light fuels have been a challenge for firefighters. Day shift tomorrow will focus on direct and indirect suppression strategies. Firefighters will continue to assess and prep structures. At this time, there are 7 engines, 2 hand crews, and aircraft when available assigned to the fire. Additional resources have been requested. REDDING, Calif. — Shasta-Trinity National Forest officials issued a Forest Closure Order for the area of the August Complex – North Zone Fire burning on the South Fork Management Unit. The closure order No. 14-20-09 prohibits public entry on to National Forest System lands in the closure area, including roads, trails, and recreation sites. It supersedes 14-20-08 and is effective September 19, 2020 until the August Complex – North Zone Fire is declared out. The area closed is the portion of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest south and west of the forest boundary at Highway 36 west of Platina, west of County Road 302 to its northern intersection with Highway 3, west and south of County Road 301 from outside Hayfork, and south and east of County Road 311 and Forest Road 3N10 to the forest’s western and southern boundaries, and all National Forest System land and roads within that area. State and County Roads, as well as private land within this area, are not closed by the Forest, however, may be closed by State and County officials.

In addition to the above closures, the Pacific Southwest Regional Office eased fire restrictions for all national forests in the region with propane and gas stoves now permitted in developed recreation sites. Developed recreation sites are defined as areas that have been improved or developed for recreation such as campgrounds and day use sites. See Regional Order No. 20-18 for more information.

The fires in the August Complex began on August 17, 2020 and were started by lightning. The multiple small fires have expanded and grown together in the Shasta-Trinity, Mendocino, and Six Rivers National Forests, as well as areas outside the forests. The fires are being managed in 3 zones (North, South, and West) by the USDA Forest Service and CAL FIRE. It is currently the largest wildfire in California history.

USDA Forest Service and CAL FIRE are engaged in a coordinated response to manage and suppress the August Complex.  The Complex has been divided into three zones; North, South and West.  Geographically, the North Zone is in the northern area of the Mendocino National Forest in the Yolla Bolly Wilderness; near Tomhead Lookout on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest; and in the northwest near Kettenpom Valley and the Flying AA Ranch on the Six Rivers National Forest.

Current Situation (August Complex-North Zone): Conditions today will be dry, windy and with less smoke which will influence fire behavior. The priority in the North Zone is structure protection, indirect line construction (away from the fire’s edge) and tactical firing operations (applying fire on the ground to remove vegetation and widen containment lines).

In Ruth Valley, south of Ruth (Six Rivers National Forest), the fire has become established above the Ruth Community Church and northeast of Horse Ridge Lookout.  As the fire continues to move northeast, firefighters will engage and do structure defense around the homes along the Ruth Lake Road.

On the west perimeter of the fire (Zenia Area), dozers are being used to construct indirect lines on Road 3S09 to Zenia Lake Mtn Road (3S21).   Crews are working to complete hand lines to the Middle Fork of the Eel River. 

On the northeast perimeter (Shasta-Trinity National Forest), the 35 Road continues to be an important strategic containment line to stop the progress of the fire. Crews continue working from Rat Trap to the east, improving the line and using tactical firing operations. The east perimeter near Red Bluff is in mop-up and patrol status.  A ten-person crew of smokejumpers will be utilized on the north portion of the fire to assess historic structures in the area.

Weather:   A trough of low pressure will bring gusty south-southwest winds over the area.  The winds combined with the low relative humidity will create elevated fire weather conditions.

Smoke Outlook: Air quality remains unhealthy in many areas, with very unhealthy air overnight in foothill areas strongly affected by settling of down drainage smoke. Slightly stronger southerly winds may bring some gradual improvements today, with southwesterly winds continuing the slow clearing trend tomorrow.

As of 6:00 AM, Friday, September 11, 2020, the fires that were formally known as Elkhorn, Hopkins, Vinegar Peak and Willow Basin will now be reported as the August Complex-North Zone.  The North Zone will be managed by California Interagency Management Team 5, under the direction of Rick Young, Incident Commander.  The August Complex-North Zone is burning on the Mendocino, Shasta-Trinity and Six Rivers National Forests.

A Virtual Public Meeting will be live streamed Friday, September 11, 2020 at 7:00PM for the August Complex-North Zone. The meeting will be broadcast on Shasta Trinity National Forest Facebook @ShastaTrinityNF, Six Rivers National Forest Facebook @SixRiversNF and Mendocino National Forest @MendocinoNF.  If you would like questions answered during the virtual public meeting, please submit them through the Facebook pages.

The August Complex-North Zone will release one morning information update with fire facts and a current situation overview. Also, throughout the day as changes or significant events occur, information will be posted to Facebook, Twitter and Inciweb at the above addresses.

Current Situation: With limited resources assigned to the August Complex-North Zone, the priority will be on structure protection in the Ruth Valley, south of Ruth (Six Rivers National Forest).  As the fire becomes more active throughout the day, firefighters will reposition to provide structure protection where needed.   On the North perimeter, (Shasta-Trinity National Forest) the priority is to improve the containment line along Forest Road 35.  Firefighters will continue to use tactical firing operations to widen the containment lines and stop the forward progress of the fire.   The east perimeter near Red Bluff is in mop-up and patrol status. 

Weather: Significant smoke shading over the fire area will moderate daytime temperatures. Relative humidity is increasing with some onshore flow.  Winds will generally be light as a stable air mass continues to dominate the weather pattern.

Smoke Outlook: Smoke impacts from the fire are expected to be Unhealthy to Very Unhealthy conditions over the next 24 hours.

The Elkhorn, Hopkins, Vinegar Peak and Willow Basin Fires have merged and now are a part of the Elkhorn Fire. The Elkhorn Fire is burning on the Mendocino, Shasta-Trinity and Six Rivers National Forests.  The increase in acreage and the reduction in percent contained are the result of the consolidation of all fires merging into one.

Current Situation: Firefighters worked last night to secure the line on the northern perimeter along the 35 Road (Shasta-Trinity National Forest), utilizing firing operations to remove vegetation and widen the containment along the dozer line.  On the west and north west perimeter of the fire (Six Rivers National Forest), crews continue to provide protection for structures in the Ruth area.  The goal is to try and push the fire north towards Horse Ridge and Soldier Basin, keeping it out of the valley.   The east perimeter of the fire is in mop-up and patrol status.  Today, while the weather has stabilized, we will continue to experience active fire behavior due to low relative humidity, steep terrain and very dry conditions in the forest. 

Weather: High pressure will build back into the area causing an inversion which will keep smoke and haze over the fire area.  The shading caused by the smoke inversion  will keep temperatures lower and winds light. Relative humidity will be in the 11-13% range.

Zone D:  The evacuation warning has been lifted for all areas north of Lanyan Trail, east from Mary Ellen Page north to Cobb Flat, south of Pettyjohn Road, and west Gunsmoke Lane/Ranch Drive/Balis Bell Road.
