Today’s Operations: Burning operations should be completed by this evening on the south fire perimeter west of Bear Hollow Road to Mountain Sheep Pass. The north/northeast fire perimeter is expected to be active again today, burning along Brown Duck Creek. Helicopter water bucket drops will work along the eastern perimeter to cool hot spots as crews engage the fire when safe to do so. Crews and dozers should finish digging indirect containment lines ahead of the fire’s eastern perimeter today as well. Team 7’s long term strategy to contain all fire outside the wilderness continues.

Weather: Today’s temperatures are expected to be near 76 degrees. Relative humidities are low and fire behavior is active. Winds will be from the northwest early in the day at 7-9 mph with gusts up to 20 mph, with southeasterly winds later in the day. Large heavy fuels continue to burn, and grass and shrubs have dried and are receptive to fire. Active fire behavior is expected in higher elevations due to increased winds. Today’s burning operations will produce additional smoke, visible in surrounding communities. Weather tonight will be in the high 40s.

East Fork Fire: Warmer temperatures have reawakened the fire, leading to increased fire behavior and smoke yesterday. The fire burned actively in the Bear Wallow and Brown Duck Creek areas. Crews successfully burned west of Moon Lake Road and north of Bear Hollow Road, which will hold fire progression to the southeast.

Community Meeting: A virtual community meeting will be held Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at 7 p.m. Two options will be available for viewing: The Ashley National Forest Facebook page will live-stream the event, and a Zoom link will be provided in tomorrow’s update.

Correspondingly, relative humidities are declining and fire behavior is becoming more active. Winds will be from the southwest 7-11 mph with gusts to 17 mph. Large heavy fuels continue to burn, and grass and shrubs have dried out and are receptive to fire. Today’s burning operations will produce additional smoke, visible in surrounding communities. Weather tonight will be in the high 40s.

Warmer temperatures and low humidity increased fire activity, notably west of Moon Lake and north of Twin Pots Reservoir

East Fork Fire: Clear skies on Friday allowed aerial resources to be utilized for suppression operations. Ground crews directed helicopter water bucket drops on hot spots along the fire perimeter. Clear skies, combined with warmer temperatures, increased fire activity, where crews completed prep work on the Yellowstone Road and continued line construction from Moon Lake Road to Rock Creek Road.

Center Creek Trail Fire: Helicopters worked the southeast portion of the fire yesterday, dropping water on hot spots. Tactical operations like this, along with the continued development of defensible space further south, are part of Team 7’s strategy.

Along Yellowstone Road, crews are making good progress creating defensible space around infrastructure by removing vegetation. Road crews are working to improve access for fire crews. Significant heat remains throughout the fire area as heavy fuels continue to burn.

Weather: Today begins a warming trend as temperatures will be 15 to 20 degrees higher than yesterday. As temperatures continue to increase, fire behavior will become more active. Large heavy fuels will continue to burn, and grass and shrubs will become more receptive to fire. Weather tonight will be in the mid to upper 30s with steady north winds of 10 - 15 mph and gusts to  22 mph.
