VALE, Ore. – Accidentes vehiculares son la principal causa de lastimaduras y muertes asociadas con respuestas a incendios forestales, y varios factores están aumentando el potencial de accidentes en el área del Incendio Inician Creek.

Primero, se está realizando trabajo en la Carretera 20 cerca del marcador de millas 193 al este de Juntura, solo un carril esta abierto y con vehículos de piloto.  Segundo, el Sábado se abre la cacería con flecha de venado y alce, y el área alrededor del Camino Pole Creek es un área popular para cazar.

Se les pide a los automovilista que aumenten su conocimiento situacional en la carretera y caminos secundarios para su seguridad así como la de los combatientes.  Ningún camino está cerrado, pero los caminos secundarios pueden estar más rudos de lo regular debido al alto uso durante el esfuerzo de supresión.

VALE, Ore. – Vehicular accidents are the leading cause of injuries and deaths associated with wildfire responses, and several factors are adding to the potential for accidents in the area of the Indian Creek Fire.

First, roadwork is being performed on Hwy. 20 near mile marker 193 east of Juntura, with one lane traffic and pilot vehicles. Second, Saturday is the first day of bow hunting season for deer and elk, and the area around Pole Creek Road is a popular hunting spot.

Motorists are asked to maintain heightened situational awareness on the highway and secondary roads for their own safety as well as that of firefighters. No roads are closed, but secondary roads may be rougher than usual due to high use during the suppression effort.

Those traveling Pole Creek Road and its surroundings should expect to encounter fire crews, vehicles and heavy equipment. Residual smoke within the containment lines will be visible in some places. Any active burning observed should be reported by calling Vale Dispatch at 541-473-6295 or 9-1-1.

Hunters on the ground should use extreme care when walking through the burn zone, as ash can camouflage uneven terrain and stump holes. There may also be hot areas in the interior of the fire footprint that could damage footwear and cause burn injuries.

Fire crews will still be moving throughout the fire zone rehabilitating and patrolling containment lines. When preparing to shoot, take an extra moment to confirm your target is not wearing a yellow shirt.

Fire restrictions remain in effect on the Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Reclamation-protected lands within the Vale District. VALE, Ore. – Mientras que la supresión del incendio Indian Creek ha sido el centro de atención durante las últimas dos semanas, otro personal de Vale Bureau of Land Management se ha concentrado en el futuro.

VALE, Ore. – While suppression of the Indian Creek Fire has been the center of attention for the last two weeks, other Vale Bureau of Land Management staff have been focusing on the future.

Natural and cultural resource specialists have been on the ground from the start, advising firefighters of sensitive areas and identifying minimal-impact suppression techniques (MIST) to lessen the fire’s impact as well as observing the fire’s effects on the landscape firsthand.

Soon, they will begin planning and implementing the 3 to 5-year process of emergency stabilization and rehabilitation (ES&R) work needed to protect and restore the landscape left behind.

“This is critical mule deer and sage-grouse habitat, in addition to grazing and general wildlife forage,” said Dustin Fowler, a rangeland management specialist for Vale BLM. “We hope to spray imazapic (an herbicide) this fall to prevent cheatgrass and medusahead from moving in, then seed native grasses in the spring to start reestablishing the deep-rooted perennials.”

All federal land management actions require some level of environmental analysis before any work begins, but some activities are likely, such as stream bank stabilization along Pole Creek and other waterways where the fire burned away vegetation that held soils in place. Depending on resources and conditions, blue bunch grass, native forbs, bitterbrush and sagebrush could be replanted in key areas.

WEATHER: Temperatures should stay in the 80s through weekend and smoke from fires in California and western Oregon should clear out today. Much cooler weather is expected to move in Sunday.

SAFETY: Bow hunting season for deer and elk begins Saturday, and hunters are now out scouting for hunting spots.  This popular activity can add to the traffic volume along Hwy. 20 and secondary roads.  It also means that wildlife are likely to be more active. VALE, Ore. – Containment lines are nearly complete around the Indian Creek Fire’s perimeter. Crews are now working to reinforce them while restoring disturbed soil to a more natural appearance.

Tuesday evening, the fire measured 48,128 acres with 40 percent containment.

Fire investigators have determined the fire to be human-caused. All human fires are preventable. These take resources away from the protection of life and property, which can limit the resources available to respond to initial attack.

The public plays a valuable role in preventing wildfires. VALE, Ore. – Los combatientes están ganándole la ventaja al Incendio Indian Creek, aunque aún queda bastante trabajo por hacer. “Tuvimos un muy buen día [el Lunes],”  digo el líder de operaciones Brent Meisinger.  “Seguiremos profundizando nuestras líneas en los siguientes días.”
 
El incendio no se considera contenido hasta que la línea de control este a 100-pies alrededor de cada área donde al reencender podría potencialmente propagarse a la vegetación no quemada fuera de la frontera del incendio. Gracias a la llegada de brigadas y motobombas adicionales, ese trabajo está progresando más rápido cada día.

Vale Bureau of Land Management (Agencia de Vale de Manejo de Tierras Federales) gasta como $3.8 millones al año en preparación, cual incluye combatientes, capacitación, equipo, suministros, prevención, educación y mitigación.  Hasta ahora, el costo para la Agencia de Manejo de Tierras Federales o sea Bureau of Land Management, por los esfuerzos de la supresión del Incendio de Indian Creek ha superado los $4.1 millones.  Solamente el apoyo aéreo representa alrededor de un tercio de esa cantidad.

VALE, Ore. – Firefighters are gaining the upper hand on the Indian Creek Fire, although there is still much work to be done.

“We had a really good day [Monday],” Operations Chief Brent Meisinger said. “We’ll keep on deepening our lines over the next several days.”
The fire will not be considered contained until a 100-foot control line is around every area where a reignition could potentially spread into unburned vegetation outside the fire boundary. Thanks to the arrival of additional crews and engines, that work is progressing more quickly each day.
 
Monday evening, the fire was estimated to be 47,657acres with 28 percent containment. Dozer line rehabilitation is beginning in some areas and crews will also go back and smooth over the hand dug firelines for a more natural appearance after they are no longer needed.

Wildfires burn an average of 6 million acres a year. The U.S government spends about $2 billion a year suppressing them, not to mention the incalculable cost of lost lives, damaged or destroyed private and public property, rangeland, wildlife, ecosystems and habitat.

Vale Bureau of Land Management spends approximately $3.8 million a year on fire preparedness, which includes firefighters, training, equipment, supplies, prevention education and mitigation. Large-scale wildfires like the Indian Creek Fire are funded separately and can cost many millions of dollars.
 
“With much of the Nation's wildland firefighting resources currently engaged on active fires, you can help our firefighters by being fire-safe and preventing more human-caused fires,” said Al Crouch, Prevention and Mitigation Specialist for Vale BLM.  
 
WEATHER: A continued chance of lightning combined with a wind shift Wednesday could test containment lines, followed by a warming and drying trend Thursday through Saturday.

SAFETY: Watch for increased traffic on Hwy. 20 and secondary roads. Expect to see large vehicles and heavy equipment entering and leaving the roadway.

After pulling his cows off an allotment in the Indian Creek Fire zone late last week, a local rancher realized one calf was unaccounted for. Unable to go back and look for it, he notified fire officials, who spread the word. After spending two nights alone on the range, a crew found the calf Sunday and delivered it to Incident Fire Operations trainee Russell Hamilton of Spokane. Hamilton then escorted the calf outside the fire zone to be reunited with its mother.

VALE, Ore. – Los combatientes han hecho significante progreso hacia contener el Incendio Indian Creek y están cambiando la operaciones a rastreo y liquidación del incendio.

Para el Domingo al anochecer el incendio estaba estimado en 49,132 acres, con 20% contenido.

El rastreo es controlando un borde de fuego parcialmente muerto inspeccionando cuidadosamente las líneas de fuego en busca de calor con el dorso de la mano para asegurar que no quedan brasas calientes. El rastreo reduce humo residual después de que el incendio es controlado al extinguir y quitar material ardiendo. Ambas actividades refuerzan las líneas a medida a que se avanza hacia la contención.

Los recursos se han dividido en dos campamentos para concentrar el trabajo en las áreas donde el fuego ha sido más activo hacia el oeste y el noreste/este. El Campo Justice afuera de Westfall ha servido como base para los combatientes que monitorean y mantienen la huella del fuego por la noche. Hoy, las brigadas se desplazarán a rastreo y liquidación para conectar con las líneas bien establecidas alrededor de la esquina sureste. El Campo Cave en el flanco occidental está posicionado para concentrar en los focos secundarios proteger el Reservoir Zottto.

A partir del Domingo, había 9 brigadas, 6 dozer, 9 cisternas de agua, 36 motobombas y un helicóptero asignados al incendio. Otros recursos aéreos compartidos asistían cuando era necesario. No se ha reportado ningún accidente o lastimadura.

TIEMPO ATMOSFERICO: El tiempo aun esta en Condiciones Críticas de Incendio con temperaturas alrededor de los 85 grados con vientos lentos del Oeste/Suroeste. El humo afecta las condiciones al reducir las temperaturas y moderando las condiciones del fuego.

SEGURIDAD: Tener cuidado con el aumento de tráfico en la carretera 20 entre Burns y Vale y a lo largo del Camino Harper-Westfall a medida que los recursos se mueven en posición alrededor del perímetro del incendio.
