FOREST FIRE DANGER BRIEFING

July 23, 2020

Background

Throughout the calendar year there is a need to evaluate fuels and weather conditions and fire activity to determine the need to adjust the public facing fire danger level and implement the associated graduating scale of fire use restrictions.

Current Fuels and Weather Situation: The above average fine fuels load, particularly annual grasses have fully cured due to several early season heat waves and sustained periods of above average temperatures in July. The energy Release component in most areas on the forest are above average, the ERCs in several areas are near historical maximum values. Fuel Moisture values throughout the forest currently range from as low as 77% to 116% and continue to trend dramatically downward in all areas, with several areas already at critical.

Outlook Fuels and Weather Conditions:

- Temperatures near normal through September becoming above normal in October.

- Below normal rainfall through the period.

- Less monsoonal thunderstorms than normal through September.

- Above normal offshore wind events in October.

Fire Management Situation: In the last 30 days we have experienced a total of 23 of the last 30 in a forest average BI of High and 36 statistical fires including 2 fires for over 600 acres. Seasonal drying, weather conditions and the increased public use on the national forest has led to a significant increase of initial attack activity.

Geographic Area PL = 3

National Area PL = 3

Engine, Crew and overhead resources are now sitting at or near drawdown levels on the forest.

Move to Fire Danger Level and Fire Use Restrictions: Elevate the Forest Fire Danger Level from VERY HIGH to EXTREME effective on Saturday August 1, 2020. Move into full fire restrictions including prohibiting campfires in developed sites. Forest Order No. 05-01-20-05
