South Fire Incident Update 91719

Related Incident:
Publication Type: Announcement

Current Fire Situation:

As of this morning, the South Fire is approximately 5190 acres with 53% containment. Lower temperatures and higher humidities resulted in minimal fire activity and growth on Monday.

The South Fire is in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, southeast of Tomhead Mountain, west of Red Bluff, and 15 miles south of Platina CA. The fire is in a remote and very rugged area of the forest.

The western portion of the South Fire, within the Yolla Bolly Wilderness, is being managed under a “confine” strategy. Firefighters are restricting fire spread to pre-established boundaries: south of Humboldt Ridge; east of Sanford Ridge; and north of Cottonwood Creek. This strategy allows managers to balance the risks and costs of suppression activities against the beneficial effects of the fire. The eastern portion of the fire is outside of the wilderness area and is being managed under a full suppression strategy. This portion has very little activity. The entire fire currently is confined to within the wilderness or containment lines.

Today firefighters will focus on improving containment lines, cooling any hot spots near the perimeter and repairing roads. The top priorities are to continue providing for firefighter and public safety; protection of private and Forest Service infrastructure; protection of natural and cultural resources; and limiting fire spread to within the established boundaries.

Today’s forecast is for warmer and drier weather. Temperatures are forecast for 60-65 at 5000 feet and 70-75 at 2500 feet. Light winds will be upslope and up canyon at 2-5 mph. This afternoon’s winds will be from the southwest and west at 5-9 mph.

Redding, CA – Firefighting efforts continue this weekend across the Shasta-Trinity National Forest on fires resulting from last week's thunderstorms. The largest of these fires is the 1665-acre South Fire, located southeast of Tomhead Mountain west of Red Bluff. Incident Management Team 16 will be transitioning with the forest today and will take command of the fire Sunday morning at 6 a.m.

The Ramshorn Fire burning east of Highway 3 and west of Castle Crags has grown to approximately 250 acres. Water and retardant drops are slowing the fire's spread while crews are working to establish containment line.

The Cutthroat Fire, located north of Highway 299 near Big Flat, is holding at 15 acres. Water and retardant drops have been very successful in slowing fire progression and crews are building line around the perimeter.

The Middle Fire, located northeast of the Canyon Creek Trailhead in the Trinity Alps Wilderness, has grown to approximately 100 areas and is impacting the Canyon Creek and Bear Creek trails. Hikers and horse riders are encouraged to avoid the area.

Aerial reconnaissance flights and ground patrol efforts will continue across the forest for the next few days to help locate these newly identified fires. To report a new fire, please call 911.
