Rum Creek Fire Evening Highlight for Friday, September 9

Today the Rum Creek Fire experienced no increase in size. The public is reminded there is an active Heat Advisory and Red Flag Warning for Josephine County lasting through Saturday night. Unprecedented heat, low humidity, and winds will create critical fire conditions. The public should be very cautious this weekend as the risk for new fire starts and rapid growth will be extreme.

Containment increases to 42% on Rum Creek Fire MERLIN, Ore. – Despite the heat and rugged terrain, firefighters on the Rum Creek Fire continue to make progress. Containment has increased to 42%, with most edges of the fire mopped up at least 75 feet inside fire lines. The tactical firing operation on the ridge between Rum Creek and Montgomery Creek went well, with fire backing down both sides of the ridge. Fire personnel continue to monitor this and other areas, watching for flare-ups and spot fires.

Evacuations reduced near Rum Creek FireMERLIN, Ore. – Josephine County Sheriff’s Office has reduced or eliminated the evacuation notices for some of the areas near the Rum Creek Fire. Areas to the east of the fire, including the communities of Merlin, Hugo, Three Pines, Leland, and Wolf Creek, are no longer under the Level 1: GET READY notification. The Level 2: GET SET to the east of Hog Creek is reduced to a Level 1: GET READY.

Rum Creek Fire will be tested again MERLIN, Ore. – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Tuesday afternoon and evening for the Rum Creek Fire area. A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. The forecast calls for high temperatures, gusty winds and low relative humidity. These conditions may cause a fire to flare up, and promote rapid spread of fire.
