UPDATE: The Superstition Fire is a lightning-caused wildfire discovered on 8/20/20 in the Superstition Wilderness north of Gold Canyon AZ. Air Attack completed a recon of the fire this morning and has mapped it at 1050 acres, 0% contained. Minimal fire behavior was observed this morning. The fire is creeping slowly towards the northwest. At this time, the fire is hung up in a rocky area and is struggling to find available fuels to burn.

While there is minimal smoke on the Superstition Fire this morning, as temperatures increase, and relative humidity decreases, the potential for an increase in fire behavior exists. This may result in smoke and flames being visible from the East Valley and Gold Canyon communities. There is 1 engine assigned to the Peralta Canyon Rd area. They will patrol and monitor the fire activity, and order additional resources if necessary. There are NO threats to any community at this time.

Air Attack will fly the fire again this afternoon and intermittently throughout the day as they recon other fires in the area.Good overnight humidity recoveries last night, and a very small amount of rain has helped decrease fire activity. Good overnight humidity recoveries are expected tonight as well. While there are no closures associated with the Superstition Fire at this time, visitors in the area must be aware of their surroundings at all times.

Remember that all wildland fire incidents are No Drone Zones. The presence of civilian drones in the fire area will immediately ground any suppression or aerial supervision aircraft immediately.

Burnout Operations Planned for Jungle Creek Fire

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Update 08/26/2020: Burnout operations on the Jungle Creek Fire continue through today as planned. Residents and travelers are advised to expect to see increased smoke visibility near the communities of Cle Elum, Ellensburg, Naches, and Yakima.

On August 17th, 2020 in the Jungle Creek area, a wildfire started within the Little Naches River drainage. Ground and aerial resources have been working to actively suppress the fire by constructing fire lines and utilizing helicopter bucket drops to cool hot spots. Cooler weather over the past several days has allowed crews to make substantial progress and has moderated fire activity.

As favorable weather continues to hold, burnout operations are being prepared by the Type III Incident Management Team, led by Incident Commander Dan Gleason.

A burnout operation will consume fuel between the edge of the fire and control lines to ensure there is an adequate boundary between the advancing fire and unburned fuels.

If conditions remain suitable and burnout operations are conducted, anticipate them to begin Tuesday afternoon with active burning through the end of the week. During the burnout smoke will become highly visible to I-90 travelers and to the communities of Naches, Yakima, Ellensburg, and Cle Elum.  Residual smoke may be noticeable for several days as interior fuels continue to burn.

The fire is currently burning in extremely rugged terrain making it too hazardous for firefighters on the ground to complete a large portion of the ignitions.  To reduce the risk to firefighters on the ground, aerial ignitions will be implemented with the use of helicopters.
