Weather and Fire Behavior: Unseasonably warm and dry weather is expected to continue throughout the day. Temperatures could be 2-4 degrees higher than yesterday with light winds coming from the southwest. Stable weather conditions have trapped some of the smoke from California in the valleys and it is likely for smoke to become more visible throughout the day.  Fire behavior will continue to be minimal with smoldering.

Beachie Creek Fire: Mop up operations have yielded success in securing the area around structures in the Highway 22 corridor and in the North Fork/Elkhorn area.  Contingency lines were strengthened and patrolled along the entire southern edge of the fire.  In the Abiqua basin, heavy equipment continued to operate along fire impacted roads clearing vegetation and removing hazards. Firefighters responded to 9-1-1 calls reporting smoke within the fire perimeter.  Engines and hand crews worked together to seek out and eliminate remaining ground heat within the fire perimeter. 

Patrol, monitor, and mop-up operations will continue today. Suppression repair in the Mollala area is ongoing and firefighters are coordinating with Resource Advisors on future suppression repair needs.

Hunting in Burned Areas

People intending to hike into, or near, the fire area should remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times.  Know the forecasted weather before entering the area, assess the weather conditions while in the area, and stay clear of burned trees. Don’t camp or hang out in the wildfire area.  And, as always, let someone know your planned route, destination and expected return time.

• Hazard trees or snags tend to pose the most imminent threat.  Dead or dying trees that remain standing after a wildfire are unstable, especially in high winds. 

• People are more likely to be aware of obstacles on the ground but don’t often look up to assess danger.

• Forest visitors can expect to encounter firefighter traffic, dusty roads, areas of smoke.

• Other hazards to be aware of include:

• Burned-out stump holes can make the ground weak and subject to failure.

• Loose rocks and logs are unpredictable and present the hazard of rolling debris.

• Ash and fallen needles are slippery and can make for treacherous footing on trails.

• Flash floods and mud flows may occur, especially in areas without vegetation.

Hunters may be traveling in areas with high fire dangers or fire closures from recent or ongoing wildfires. Hunters are asked to use extreme caution and follow all fire restrictions while in the field.  Here are a few things to keep in mind if you are planning to hunt on public lands:

• Know before you go if there fire restrictions in effect.

• Consider campfire alternatives such as propane stoves.

• If campfires are allowed, make sure your fire is dead out before leaving. Drown, stir, and drown again. If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave.

• Do not idle, drive or park on dry grass as vehicle exhaust and undercarriage could potentially ignite the grass or brush.

• Do not flick a cigarette out a vehicle window because it can start a wildfire.  Extinguish smoking materials in the vehicle ashtray.

• Check any chain you may be using on a trailer. Dragging metal on the roadbed can start a shower of sparks into dry vegetation causing a wildfire.

• Report wildfires by calling 911.

• As always, let someone know your planned route, destination and expected return time.

EMERGENCY CLOSURE OF PUBLIC LANDS:

AGENCY:  Bureau of Land Management, Northwest Oregon District, Oregon.

ACTION: Temporary Closure of Public Lands
SUMMARY: Pursuant to 43 CFR 9268.3(d) and 43 CFR 8364.1, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) hereby
provides notice that effective immediately, the public lands described below are closed to all
forms of public access. This action is in response to large fires currently active in the area. The
BLM is closing public lands in order to reduce conflicts with emergency crews and allow for fire
suppression and burned area site recovery.

AFFECTED AREA: All BLM-managed public lands, roads, sites, and trails in the following areas are
impacted by this closure notice:
•     BLM lands inside the Holiday Farm Fire Closure Area (see attached map1) and land north of Hwy  20
•     BLM lands inside the Beachie Creek and Riverside Campground Fire Closure Area (see attached map2)

DATES: This closure is effective immediately and will remain in effect until such time as
conditions allow for safe use of the public lands.

DISCUSSION OF THE RULES: The public must not enter the closure area. All uses within the closure
area are prohibited. Exceptions to these prohibitions are noted below under Exemptions. Incidents
of extreme fire behavior and extreme fire danger have been observed throughout the District. You
must not enter closed recreation sites. Recovery of these areas is expected to continue into next
year, 2021.

EXEMPTIONS: The following persons are exempt from the provisions of this Order:
1.    Any Federal, State, or Local Officer, or member of an organized medical, rescue or
firefighting force engaged in fire, emergency, or law enforcement activities, or public utility
employees engaged in emergency repairs.
2.    BLM employees, contractors, or agents engaged in official duties:
3.    Individuals operating within the scope of their official and legitimate governmental duties.
4.                                                          l signed by the BLM Authorized Officer

PENALTIES: Any person who violates this may be tried before a United States Magistrate and fined in

Today’s Activities: This will be the last shift for Canadian firefighters, who have been essential to the firefighting effort. Fire crews will resume patrolling and mop up work to secure the area around structures near the south end of the fire perimeter and the Highway 22 corridor/Elkhorn area.  Heavy equipment, engines and hand crews will be operating along fire impacted roads. Hand-lines are being reinforced where needed, snags are being dropped for safety, and slash along the roads is being chipped or removed.  Where appropriate, fire line repair will begin. The goal of repair is to mitigate long-term impacts of fire suppression on the landscape such as erosion. The fire perimeters on Riverside and Beachie Creek Fires total approximately 800 miles in length.  This is a comparable driving distance between Portland, Oregon and Salt Lake City, Utah.

Various fall hunting seasons are beginning across western Oregon. Hunters are reminded to “know before you go” and to check Forest Service websites for closure information and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) webpages for hunting specific regulations. Despite recent rains and cooler temperatures, fire season and regulated-use closure are still in effect for lands protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry in Clackamas, Marion, and Linn counties. Actualizaciones del Incendio de Beachie Creek  –  Martes  29  de Septiembre, 2020 -9:00 a.m.

Comportamiento del clima y el fuego:  Hoy se espera que continuaran las condiciones soleadas y secas. Las temperaturas serán elevadas en los altos 70’s y bajos 80’s. Los combustibles molidos como palos, hojas y materiales orgánicos se secarán a medida que los niveles de humedad bajen hasta un 15%. Los vientos ligeros soplarán del sureste con ráfagas de hasta 5 mph. No se anticipa un crecimiento significativo del incendio, pero se espera una actividad de fuego lento y dentro del perímetro del incendio. Pueden observarse bolsas aisladas de humo en el área de la quemadura y en áreas adyacente. La tendencia de calentamiento y secado continuará con los próximos días.

Ayer: Las líneas de contingencia continuaron reforzándose junto a las comunidades y otras infraestructuras críticas. Beachie Creek Fire Update – Tuesday, September 29, 2020 – 9:00 a.m.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Sunny, clear and dry conditions are expected to continue today. Temperatures will be elevated in the upper 70’s and lower 80’s. Ground fuels such as sticks, leaves and organic materials will dry out as humidity levels drop as  low as 15%. Light winds will blow out of the southeast with gusts to 5 mph. Significant growth of the fire is not anticipated but creeping and smoldering fire activity is expected within the fire perimeter. Isolated pockets of smoke may be observed in and adjacent to the burn area. The warming and drying trend will continue for the next several days.

Yesterday:  Contingency lines continued to be reinforced adjacent to communities and other critical infrastructure. In the Highway 22 corridor and in the North Fork/Elkhorn area, firefighters patrolled the fire perimeter and responded to small, isolated burning pockets that produced visible smoke near fire lines. In the Abiqua basin, engines and hand crews focused on mop-up operations to seek out remaining ground heat. Heavy equipment worked east of the burn area to strengthen both direct and indirect contingency lines. No significant growth on the Beachie Creek Fire occurred.

Today’s Activities: Pacific Northwest Team 3 will begin management of the Beachie Creek fire. Firefighters will resume work to secure the area around structures near the south end of the fire perimeter and the Highway 22 corridor/Elkhorn area. Mop up efforts will also continue in the Abiqua basin. Engines will be used to patrol and mop up areas of heat adjacent to private property and structures. Heavy equipment will be operating along fire impacted roads. An important focus will be on hazard tree mitigation to allow firefighters to work safely. The winds may cause smoke to drift into western Oregon from large wildfires in northern California. No significant fire growth on the Beachie Creek fire is anticipated.

Salem, Ore. –  Un fuerte patrón de clima cálido y seco se mueve sobre las montañas Cascades el lunes y cambia la dirección del viento, empujando el humo directamente hacia las comunidades en el flanco occidental del incendio de Beachie Creek. Con ráfagas de viento de hasta 35 millas por hora, probablemente verá y olerá humo, pero el fuego tiene un crecimiento mínimo.

Prepare to see and smell smoke but the fire has minimal growth

East winds push smoke west Monday right to Silverton, Silverton hills,

Silver Falls State Park, and likely Lyons

Salem, Ore. –A strong warming and drying weather pattern moves over the Cascades Monday and shifts wind direction, pushing smoke right into the communities on the western flank of the Beachie Creek fire. With wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour, you will likely see and smell smoke, but the fire has minimal growth.  

Within the fire’s footprint, tree stumps continue to smolder where the fire moved underground burning root systems. On Monday, ground fire may get oxygen, producing more smoke. The fuels are too wet to allow growth, but a few flames might be seen that will not go anywhere. This is typical fire behavior, and this smoldering will go on for weeks or months but is not likely to escape the fireline.  

In the Abiqua Basin area, contractors are working with heavy equipment to remove downed trees and mitigate hazards so firefighters can get deeper into the forest to seek and destroy remaining heat. Suppression crews remain in the North Fork / Elkhorn area. Canadian crews continue to mitigate hazards along the southern perimeter.

In the Detroit to Cumley Creek area, Monday’s thermal belt will hold temperatures at night; then in the day, the strong winds shift directions potentially downing trees. Fire weakened trees continue to fall on area roads. The Oregon Department of Transportation has removed 19,200 trees off roads since the Beachie Creek fire started on August 16, 2020. Monday’s winds could result in more falling hazards; residents and motorists must be aware of their surroundings.

The Southwest Area Type 1 Incident Management Team remains confident with its direct and contingency containment lines. On Monday, another Type 1 team, the Pacific Northwest 3, shadows operations and assumes command on Tuesday. Teams typically rotate every 14 days.

The Bureau of Land Management, and State lands around the fire remain closed to the public. Parts of the Willamette National Forest are closed, and visitors are encouraged to check closures on the National Forest Website and be aware that there is still fire danger in the burn area. Salem, Ore. –  El clima del domingo trae aire seco y empuja los vientos del norte al sur. Esto significa que los residentes que acaban de regresar a sus hogares a lo largo del corredor de la autopista 22 verán y olerán más humo. Este no es un incendio nuevo; es un cambio de dirección del viento. No es necesario llamar al 911; cada llamada aleja a los bomberos de su trabajo. No ha habido un nuevo crecimiento de fuego de la huella actual, solo los tocones de árboles interiores están ardiendo. Continuará ardiendo lentamente y humeando; el humo continuará, pero las comunidades están protegidas.

Con el incendio de Beachie Creek contenido un 56 por ciento, especialmente alrededor de las comunidades, los bomberos se concentrarán el domingo en monitorear el borde del incendio, asegurándose que se destruyan los puntos calientes. La rehabilitación en tierras federales incluye equipos de bomberos que quiten mangueras y limpian escombros. Se están utilizando excavadoras y otros tipos de equipo pesado para terminar las líneas directas e indirectas, con un enfoque al este del Parque Estatal Silver Falls. En tierras privadas y estatales, el Departamento de Silvicultura de Oregón llevara a cabo reparaciones que involucran barras de agua y la reparación de cercas cortadas durante la supresión del incendio. Se utilizarán equipos de bomberos para patrullar y limpiar áreas calientes y árboles peligrosos adyacentes de propiedades privadas y la infraestructura asociada.

En las próximas semanas, el clima más cálido, la baja humedad y los vientos secarán arbustos y material orgánico que, si están al lado de tocones de árboles en llamas, podrían encenderse dentro del límite del fuego en el noreste, hacia el desierto de Bull of the Woods. Estas áreas de calor seguirán ardiendo y el humo permanecerá dentro del perímetro durante semanas, pero sin afectar el perímetro del incendio.

Se está trabajando mucho en el perímetro del incendio de Beachie Creek y los propietarios están repoblando el área. Es imperativo conducir lento y defendible.

Las Oficinas del Sheriff de los Condados Marion y Linn continuar evaluado y bajando los niveles de evacuación, pero les piden a los residentes que se mantengan conectados con sus sitios-de-web y alertas:
