Red Salmon Complex Update 10132020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

WILLOW CREEK –  Clear skies for most of Monday allowed aircraft to fly and provided crews with bucket water drops to assist with fire suppression efforts along the eastern flank. The positive effects of last weekend’s rain will start to wane in the next few days as fine fuels such as leaves and grass begin to dry out.  A” Fire Weather Watch” has been issued for Wednesday and Thursday.  This means weather conditions will continue to get warmer, drier and windier.

Safety:  Temporary Flight Restrictions remain over the entire Red Salmon fire area, which includes drones. Remember: If you fly, we can’t. Please drive slowly around fire resources on Cecilville Road.

Weather and Fire Behavior:  Weather forecasts indicate an increase in northeast winds coupled with hot and dry weather arriving in the area as early as Wednesday and continuing through Friday that will produce critical fire conditions. Temperatures will start increasing from the 70s to the 80s, humidity dropping as low as 12%, and wind gusts up to 30 mph later in the week. Skies should remain relatively clear with isolated areas of smoke near the fire today.

Today’s Operations: Crews will continue to monitor and improve containment lines on the Colgrove Branch drainage along the western flank of the fire.  On the eastern side, crews will continue to hold the fire south of the Salmon River.  Additional smoke may be visible as crews continue to conduct defensive burning in the Methodist and Plummer Creek areas bringing the fire down to the Salmon River.  In the Forks of Salmon and other areas where there is containment lines, crews are starting to remove equipment.

In areas where the fire is contained, fire suppression repairs are underway to restore hand and dozer fire lines, roads, staging areas, safety zones and drop points in order to minimize erosion. Repair and road work includes installing water bars and pulling woody debris over disturbed soils.

Evacuation Warnings remain for Forks of Salmon, Cecilville, and nearby residences (www.co.siskiyou.ca.us/sheriff) and Denny to include the Miller Ranch area (www.trinitycounty.org/OES).

Closures: Areas and roads within and near the fire perimeter on the Klamath, Six Rivers, and Trinity National Forests are closed. More information is available on forest websites: www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/klamath/alerts-notices | www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/srnf/alerts-notices | www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/stnf/alerts-notices.

Red Salmon Complex Update 10122020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

WILLOW CREEK – The results of the recent rain continued to help firefighters construct and improve fire containment lines, moving containment from 40 to 55%. The clear skies also allowed aircraft to fly reconnaissance missions and provided crews with bucket water drops to assist with fire suppression efforts along the eastern flank. The fire remained relatively quiet overnight.

Safety: With clearer skies, air resources remain available to support ground crews as long as conditions permit. Temporary Flight Restriction remains over the entire Red Salmon fire area, which includes drones. Remember: If you fly, we can’t.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Saturday’s steady rainfall has helped moderate fire behavior for several days. Temperatures will start slowly increasing up to 70 degrees, humidity as low as 25%, winds will be light at 5-10mph. Weather forecasts indicate an increase in northeast winds coupled with hot and dry weather arriving in the area as early as Wednesday evening and continuing through Friday. Skies should remain relatively clear with isolated areas of smoke.

Today’s Operations: Crews will continue to improve containment lines and mop-up on the Calgrove Branch area along the western flank of the fire. On the eastern side, indirect line construction will be underway near Ray’s Peak. As long as conditions permit, water dropping helicopters will support fire suppression efforts on the ground. Additional smoke may be visible as crews continue to conduct defensive burning in the Methodist and Plummer Creek areas.

In areas where the fire is contained, fire suppression repairs are underway to restore hand and dozer fire lines, roads, staging areas, safety zones and drop points in order to minimize erosion. Repair work can include installing water bars and pulling woody debris over disturbed soils.

Evacuation Warnings remain for Forks of Salmon, Cecilville, and nearby residences (www.co.siskiyou.ca.us/sheriff) and Denny to include the Miller Ranch area (www.trinitycounty.org/OES).

WILLOW CREEK – Yesterday, precipitation was received all across the fire area, ranging from one-third to one inch. Firefighters were unsuccessful in conducting defensive firing due to wet conditions. Crews finished setting up a community protection line around Godfrey Ranch. Crews also began suppression repair work on the north flank of the fire between Salmon Trailhead and Black Mountain.

Safety: With clearer skies, air resources will be available to support ground crews for the first time in two weeks. A Temporary Flight Restriction remains over the entire Red Salmon fire area, which includes drones. Remember: If you fly, we can’t.

Winds will be from the northwest, with gusts up to 20 mph on the ridgetops. Skies should remain relatively clear with isolated areas of smoke. Saturday’s steady rainfall helped moderate fire behavior for the next several days.

Today’s Operations:  North and northeast flank: Firefighters will continue to patrol and hold fire along the Salmon River, mop-up around structures and monitor fire progression south of Methodist Creek. In areas where the fire is contained, suppression repair plans are being developed to restore hand and dozer fire lines, roads, trails, staging areas, safety zones and drop points in order to minimize erosion. Red Salmon Complex Update 10082020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
WILLOW CREEK – Yesterday, crews were successful in conducting defensive burning operations in the New River/East Fork New River confluence near Miller Ranch. Resource advisors and firefighters completed wrapping two historic cabins near Cabin Peak in the Trinity Alps Wilderness. Firefighters brought fire down to the South Fork of the Salmon River near mile marker 11 on the Cecilville Road and installed and monitored structure protection systems (sprinklers, hoses, port-a-tanks) around residences in the Forks of Salmon, Cecilville, Godfrey Ranch, Blue Ridge, Black Bear, Miller Ranch, and Denny.

Safety: Expect temporary closures of the Cecilville Road due to firefighting operations and poor visibility.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Today, increasing clouds are likely, with lower temperatures and slightly higher humidity. Winds will come from the south, southwest. Smoky conditions have prevented use of helicopters. Precipitation is forecast for the weekend. Fuel moistures remain low in larger woody debris and are receptive to ignition.

Today’s Operations:  North and northeast flank: Crews will continue assessing fireline options along the Mazzuchi Road to keep it from moving downhill to the South Fork of the Salmon River. Road repair (grading) will continue in northwest area of the fire.

Southeast and south flank: continue defensive burning operations near the New River/East Fork of New River confluence using an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) controlled remotely by a qualified pilot. Use of this equipment decreases firefighter exposure to extreme steep slopes and increases ability for operations after dark. Mop up and monitor the fireline along Horse Linto Creek and continue improving indirect fireline along Lone Pine Ridge.

West flank: Secure containment lines in the Colgrove Branch drainage and continue road repair.

Evacuation Warnings remain for Denny (https://www.trinitycounty.org/OES) and Forks of Salmon, Cecilville, and nearby residences (https://www.co.siskiyou.ca.us/sheriff).
