Red Salmon Complex Daily Update 9112020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Current Situation:  In the early evening hours, some burning operations were conducted along the 10N02 Road. Winds started to pick up however, and minimized those opportunities. Patrol, mop-up and holding operations were continued throughout the night by fire crews.

Fire crew efforts will be focused today on repositioning containment lines to prevent fire spread towards both the community of Forks of Salmon and towards Highway 93. Fire behavior predictions suggest that once the inversion lifts today, there is the potential for fire spread in all directions. The fire is actively backing in Tish Tang Creek forming alignment for potential future runs impacting cultural and resources values in the area. The 10N02 Road will serve as a primary line for containing the fire east of the Hoopa Valley Reservation. Mastication equipment will be clearing fuels around Horse Trail Ridge in anticipation of future firing operations. There is still a critical need for suppression resources to continue prepping existing lines and build new fire containment lines, as resources are stretched extremely thin throughout the state and Pacific Northwest.

Weather:  High pressure over the area will lead to continued hot and dry weather through the end of the week. Low humidity recoveries at night with low relative humidities will persist. Smoke from fires across the region will pass overhead, at times potentially shading all or some portions of the complex.

Air Quality:  Heavy smoke from the Red Salmon Complex will combine with smoke from other fires in the area and affect the entire forecast zone. Communities that are closer to the fire may see levels towards the Very Unhealthy category with potential periods into Hazardous, while coastal communities may see some improvement tomorrow.

Area Evacuations: The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office has issued an Evacuation Warning for the community of Denny: THIS IS A MESSAGE FROM THE TRINITY COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE. THERE IS AN EVACUATION ORDER NOW IN PLACE FOR THE DENNY COMMUNITY TODAY 09-09-2020. A TEMPORARY EVACUATION POINT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED AT THE BURNT RANCH SCHOOL.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office issued an Evacuation Warning for the Red Salmon Complex fire: WARNING WILL BE ALL OF FORKS OF SALMON. FROM BUTLER FLAT TO TEN MILES EAST OF FORKS OF SALMON AND SOUTH TO PLUMMER CREEK ON CECILVILLE ROAD.

National Forest Closure Areas:  The US Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region has issued an Emergency  Closure Order of all National Forests in Region 5 (California) in pursuant to 16 U.S.C. 551 and 36 C.F.R. 261.50(a) and (b), of Regional Order No. 20-10 to provide for public safety and protect natural resources. The Red Salmon Fire Forest Closure Area became effective on August 8, 2020 under Forest Supervisor’s orders on the Klamath, Shasta-Trinity, and Six Rivers National Forests. As hunting seasons open, hunters are reminded the closure is in place for their safety as well as the safety of firefighters. Forest Service Temporarily Closes All National Forests in California

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

VALLEJO, Calif., September 9, 2020 – Due to unprecedented and historic fire conditions throughout the state, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region is announcing a temporary closure of an additional ten National Forests, meaning all eighteen National Forests in California are now closed. The closure of the additional ten forests will be effective at 5:00 pm today.

These additional forests include the Eldorado National Forest, Klamath National Forest, Lassen National Forest, Mendocino National Forest, Modoc National Forest, Six Rivers National Forest, Plumas National Forest, Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Tahoe National Forest, and Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

This decision will be re-evaluated daily as conditions change. We had closed eight National Forests on Monday evening, Sept. 7, 2020. Explosive growth of fires throughout California during the day and late evening of Sept. 8th led to this updated decision. “The number of large fires and extreme fire behavior we are seeing across the State is historic," said Regional Forester Randy Moore. "These temporary closures are necessary to protect the public and our firefighters, and we will keep them in place until conditions improve and we are confident that National Forest visitors can recreate safely. I ask all Californians and visitors to take these closures and evacuations seriously for their own safety and to allow our firefighters to focus on the mission of safely suppressing these fires."

The Forest Service thanks our partners and the public for their cooperation and understanding of this monumental fire threat. It is critical that all Californians and national forest visitors follow these important closures and restrictions for their own safety and the safety of our firefighters. Citizens with specific questions within their area may call their local forests for more information.

The Forest Service manages 18 National Forests in the Pacific Southwest Region, which encompasses over 20 million acres across California, and assists forest landowners in California, Hawaii and the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands. National forests supply 50 percent of the water in California and form the watershed of most major aqueducts and more than 2,400 reservoirs throughout the state. The Red Salmon Complex is burning on the Klamath, Six Rivers, and Shasta-Trinity National Forests within Humboldt, Siskiyou, and Trinity Counties. The Hoopa Valley Tribe is now part of the joint delegation of authority with the three National Forests. The South Central Sierra Interagency Incident Management Team 14 is managing this incident. Team 14 will continue to work closely with the Yurok Tribe, the Karuk Tribe, and local community liaisons.

Current Situation:  The fire had minimal fire behavior activity overnight, despite poor relative humidity recoveries, which stayed down into the teens and single digits. The minimal fire spread that did occur was on the southwest side of the fire. A few active areas of heat remain on the east and southeast sides of the fire as well.

Fire crew efforts will be focused today clearing dozer lines created during the Corral Fire of 2013, near the fire perimeter in the southwest area of the fire. Crews will also be in the community of Denny, where they will be making assessments and preparations. Tactical firing operations will continue along 10N02 Road, which serves as a primary line containing the fire east of the Hoopa Valley Reservation. There is still a critical need for suppression resources to continue prepping existing lines and build new fire containment lines, as resources are already stretched extremely thin throughout the state and pacific northwest.

Weather:  Winds will decrease over the fire area this morning as the pressure gradient across the region eases. The high pressure over the area will lead to continued hot and dry weather through the end of the week, with poor humidity recoveries overnight and low daytime relative humidities. A Red Flag Warning is effect until today at 12 noon.

Air Quality:  Heavy smoke from the Red Salmon Complex will combine with smoke from other fires in the area and affect the western side of the forecast zone. Communities that are closer to the fire may see elevated areas of smoke. Shasta Valley and Scott valley will see improved air quality today, with smoke moving back into those areas tomorrow.

Area Evacuations: The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office has issued an evacuation warning for the community of Denny: PER THE UNITED STATES FOREST SERVICE YOU ARE ADVISED OF A EVACUATION WARNING: THERE IS A POTENTIAL THREAT TO LIFE AND OR PROPERTY FROM THE RED SALMON FIRE WHICH IS LOCATED APPROXIMATLEY 8 MILES NORTH FROM DENNY. THOSE WHO REQUIRE ADDITIONAL TIME TO EVACUATE, AND THOSE WITH PETS AND LIVESTOCK SHOULD LEAVE NOW.

National Forest Closure Areas:  The US Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region announced yesterday the closure of all developed campgrounds and day-use sites on National Forests in California. Additionally, the prohibition of the use of any ignition source on all National System Lands (campfires, gas stoves, etc.) throughout California. Ready, Set, Go!

Creating a Disaster Supply Kit in advance will prepare your family, not only for an evacuation, but for a long stay at home if escape routes are blocked during or after a wildfire.

The American Red Cross, FEMA, and the California Emergency Management Agency recommend putting together a Disaster Supply kit with supplies for at least 72 hours, including food, water, and supplies for pets.

After a disaster, basic services, such as electricity, gas, water, and phone may be out of service for days or even weeks. This may affect some people more than others, especially if they have special needs. It’s important to consider the needs of every member of your household when creating your kit so your family is prepared to survive until additional resources are available.

A GO! Bag should contain some of the 6 P’s like prescription medication, copies of important documents (papers), and personal supplies (credit cards, toothbrush/toothpaste, phone list, maps, etc.). If you’re forced to evacuate and can grab only your GO! Bag, the items inside will make it easier for you to during and after a wildfire, earthquake, or other disaster. Keeping extra supply kits in your car and at work is also a great idea in case a wildfire or other disaster stops you from going home.

09082020 Daily Update Red Salmon Fire

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Current Situation: The inversion lifted slightly yesterday afternoon and the southeastern portion of the fire in One Mile Creek remained active. A persistent backing fire with spotting followed by short uphill runs on the south and west sides of the fire is expected to continue today. The western edge of the fire has exited the Wilderness creating an opportunity for suppression resources to utilize recently prepped and/or existing roads and trails to complete tactical firing operations. In order for this to occur, the incident has some critical resource needs, including 5 type 1 hand crews to effectively complete planned operations. The fire is actively backing into Tish Tang Creek, creating alignment for potential fire runs into Hoopa tribal lands. Firefighters continued to patrol the northeast portion of the fire along Nordheimer Creek and China Creek.

Fire crew efforts will be focused today clearing dozer lines created during the Corral Fire of 2013, near the fire perimeter in the southwest area of the fire. Tactical firing operations will continue along 10N02 Road, which serves as a primary line containing the fire east of the Hoopa Valley Reservation.

Weather: A dry cold front moved into the area from the north and east, bringing the potential to produce critical fire weather conditions with an east wind over the fire area. The expected winds did not materialize over the fire area last night; however, those winds are expected to increase throughout the day and remain a threat into Wednesday afternoon. A Red Flag Warning is effect from Monday night at 10 p.m. and has been extended until Wednesday at 12 noon.

Air Quality: Heavy smoke from the Red Salmon Complex will be transported off to the west and southwest of the fire today due to strong northeast winds over the region. Communities in the Klamath River drainage will likely see heavy smoke impacts today into tomorrow. Eureka and the coastal communities may see degrading air quality due to a strong offshore wind that may bring smoke to the surface in that area. Communities to the east of the fire are seeing heavy smoke this morning, but should see some air quality improvement throughout the day.
