Firefighters on the Polles Fire dedicate their continued efforts in pilot’s honor

Payson, Ariz. – On July 7, a helicopter under contract with the Forest Service for the Polles Fire on the Tonto National Forest crashed within the Mazatzal Wilderness yesterday taking the life of the pilot, Bryan “BJ” Boatman.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the Boatman family and friends during this very tragic time,” said Incident Commander John Pierson. “BJ is a member of our firefighter family and will be deeply missed. He took on a difficult job and served our nation well. Through his dedication, courage, and spirit, he will live on in the hearts and minds of all of us. We are continuing suppression efforts on the Polles Fire in his honor.”

Hotshot crews, with the support of airtankers and helicopters, continue their efforts on the fireline within the wilderness. They are working directly as safely as possible, along a patchy mosaic of vegetation with varying levels of heat still present. These variations have made the process of containing the fire challenging, as firefighters continue to find heat that could weaken containment lines if high winds were present. As absolute certainty in the security of the containment lines and features is attained, containment percentages will begin to grow.   Firefighters have also been working to evaluate and improve established fuel breaks that have been built strategically over the years around the communities of Pine-Strawberry, Arrowhead Estates, and Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. These areas of reduced vegetation adjacent to communities are the result of years of hard work and partnership with the community members, property owners, as well as the Tonto National Forest, Arizona Division of Forestry and Fire Management, and area fire departments, among many others, who continue to work year-round to reduce the wildfire potential within their communities. Firefighters have been strengthening these efforts as a contingency to help protect homes in the area, if needed.

Challenged by hot and dry conditions firefighters continue to make progress toward containment

Payson, Ariz. – Facing extreme conditions firefighters on the Polles Fire west of Payson continue to make marked progress toward containment. A total of 6 hotshot crews are directly engaged on the fire within the wilderness area, supported by airtankers and helicopters during the day, while other firefighters have been working adjacent to the communities and the Tonto Natural Bridge State Park, scouting vegetation conditions and enhancing established fuel breaks and roads that could help protect homes and slow fire spread should there be a shift in fire behavior on the fire, to be used only if needed. The north/northeast portion of the fire continues to be the most active area.

Crews have been taking advantage of the nighttime increase in humidity and decreased wind to make progress in building containment line. They have worked shifts late into the evening for the last few nights. These crews remain “spiked out”, sleeping in the remote wilderness, their food, drinking water and supplies flown in by helicopter daily.

Firefighters continue efforts to contain Polles Fire - Type 1 Incident Management Team transitions into command

Payson, Ariz. The area’s extremely dry conditions and the potential for extreme fire behavior have warranted the decision to bring in the support of a Type 1 Incident Management Team. Logistical support required to support the firefighters working in terrain only accessible by helicopter also increased the complexity of the incident. The Southwest Area Type 1 Incident Management Team #2, lead by Incident Commander John Pierson, has taken command of the Polles Fire effective 6:00 a.m.

“The Central West Zone Type 3 Incident Management Team and the Tonto National Forest have provided our team with a solid foundation of work from which we can continue to suppress this fire safely,” said Southwest Area Type 1 Incident Commander, John Pierson.   Hotshot crews have been flown in by helicopter and their suppression efforts have been supported by airtankers and helicopters. A nighttime increase in humidity has allowed firefighters to make progress in building containment line as they have worked shifts late into the evening for the last few nights. A total of 5 crews are directly engaged on the fire while other firefighters have been working adjacent to the communities, scouting vegetation conditions and enhancing established fuel breaks and roads that could help protect homes and slow fire spread should there be a shift in fire behavior on the fire.

Stage III Fire Restrictions and Forest Closure
Date(s): Jun 30, 2020 - Jul 31, 2020

Wildfires have burned more than 224,500 acres this year on the Tonto National Forest.  Ongoing extreme fire danger due to dry conditions and hot temperatures following a wet winter that produced an abundance of dry brush and grass, have led Tonto officials to close the state’s largest national forest beginning at 6 a.m. on July 2.   Some lakes and forest roads remain accessible.

Lightning caused fire burning west of Payson

Firefighters are actively fighting a lightning caused wildfire burning within the remote Mazatzal Wilderness, approximately 11 miles west of Payson, Ariz. The fire started as the result of a passing isolated thunderstorms on Friday, July 3. The fire is in rough and rugged terrain that is only accessible by helicopter. Hotshot crews have been flown in by helicopter and suppression efforts have been supported by airtankers delivering fire retardant and helicopters dousing the flames. Firefighters were challenged by sustained high winds, high temperatures and low humidity yesterday causing an increase in fire behavior. A nighttime increase in humidity allowed firefighters to make progress in building containment line as they worked late into the evening. Winds are expected to be less today than yesterday, but firefighters will continue to be challenged by high temperatures, dry conditions, as well as the rugged terrain.  An additional hotshot crew and a Type 2 Initial Attack crew are being flown in this morning for a total of 4 crews on the fire taking direct suppression action, again supported by aviation.   The Arizona Central West Zone Type 3 Incident Management Team is currently assisting the Tonto National Forest managing the fire. A Type 1 Incident Management Team has been ordered.  Operations today will determine the need for a transition to the next level organization.   There are no current threats to the communities of Pine-Strawberry or Payson. We do encourage that residents become familiar with Arizona’s Ready-Set-Go program and sign up for their county emergency notification system and remain alert, ready and make essential preparations.
