East Canyon Fire command will transition from the Type 3 organization to the local Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District this afternoon. The East Canyon Fire remains at 2,905 acres and 100% contained. This will be the last regular update unless conditions change.

The Durango Interagency Dispatch zone reported seven new fires today, with the largest being the Yellow Jacket fire, last reported at 80 acres. Some East Canyon fire resources were released to assist with new starts. The East Canyon Fire has minimal smoke showing at 100% containment. The Type 3 command will transition the fire to the local Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District tomorrow afternoon.

East Canyon Fire – June 28, 2020 AM Update
The Type 3 Incident Command will be transitioning the East Canyon fire to the local Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District Monday afternoon. John Lee, the Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Rescue Chief stated, “daily patrols will occur in the mornings and afternoons for about a week, and possible longer if conditions warrant.” “These patrols will primarily be by vehicle, but some foot patrol will be done in remote portions of the fire.” The interior portions of the East Canyon fire will continue to have visible smoke for weeks from smoldering stumps and small pockets of burning vegetation well within the fire perimeter. The perimeter of the fire is secure, but the interior areas will take longer to burn out and cool off.
The East Canyon fire resources from the Type 3 organization will continue to strengthen the fire perimeter by patrolling and extinguishing any heat near the fires edge today.

East Canyon Fire - June 27 PM Update
The East Canyon Fire was quiet today, but there were nine new fires in the Durango Dispatch area from last night’s lightning storms. The Morefield fire is around 25 acres and is located on the southeastern portion of Mesa Verde National Park. Fire resources are on scene. Most of the other fires stayed small and were easily contained by fire resources.
Fire resources on the East Canyon Fire monitored the fire perimeter and extinguished any heat that posed a threat to the containment lines. There are 23 personnel on the fire and its still 2905 acres and 100% contained.

The East Canyon Fire is now 100% contained at 2,905 acres. Today, fire resources will continue to hold and improve sections of the fire.
After last night’s lightning storm, initial attack fire resources could be busy today. The East Canyon fire will have some fire resources available to assist with initial attack if the area gets busy and additional fire resources are needed.

The East Canyon Fire has minimal fire behavior with some areas of heat within the interior that continues to produce small amounts of visible smoke. Today, firefighters patrolled the fire’s edge to ensure the perimeter was cold. More seeding took place on repaired dozer lines. The temporary flight restriction (TFR) over the East Canyon Fire was lifted and the Type 2 helicopter was released this afternoon. The hotshot crew will be released tomorrow morning. The East Canyon Fire remains at 2, 905 acres and 98% contained.
