Smoke Outlook for 6/09 - 6/10
Osceola National Forest Wildfires 2019
Issued at: 2019-06-09 09:28 EDT
Wildfire
Lighting started a new wildfire yesterday outside of the Osceola National Forest boundary, and firefighters quickly responded to help state and local partners suppress the fire. This is a good example that conditions are still dry, and even with the recent rain showers fires can still impact roadways and communities. Fire personnel are still actively mopping up and securing the wildfires on the Osceola National Forest. Wildfire risk will remain present until significant rainfall happens across the area.
Smoke
Smoke should be light today unless a new wildfire starts. Cloud cover overnight should keep the formation of fog to a minimum, but it can’t be ruled out altogether. Hwy 250 through the forest may see an increase in smoke in localized areas near actively smoldering fires at night and in the earlymorning hours. Rain showers have kept the formation of smoke to a minimum during the day.
Roadway Safety
Smoke can be found at different levels throughout the day as temperature and wind influence the fires. Once spotted it is wise to reduce speeds and drive with caution. Any new fires in the area can quickly produce smoke that can impact roadways and disrupt traffic. Look for smoke ahead signs along roadways and be mindful of the message.

Osceola National Forest Wildfires 2019

Wildfire
Rain has moved into the area, but not enough to put out the wildfires across the forest. Firefighters are still actively engaged with fire suppression tactics such as mopping up and securing hot spots. Lighting started a new fire yesterday, and firefighters quickly attacked and contained it. The area remains dry even with the light showers the past few days. Watch for heavy equipment and firefighting apparatus on many of the roads within the forest.
Smoke
Smoke will remain light as storms move through the area. Roadways adjacent to wildfire or prescribed fire can still see some localized smoke impacts that may reduce visibility. Reduce speed in fire areas, and expect smoke in the early morning hours and late evenings. Cloud cover should reduce the probability for fog however, some localized patches can never be ruled out with high humidity.
Prescribed Fire
The Big Gum Wilderness Prescribed Fire on the Osceola National Forest continues to smolder and burn within the perimeter. Smoke remains light, but as the prescribed fire burns through dead and down fuels smoke production may
increase. Fire managers are monitoring the situation closely each day.

Osceola National Forest Wildfires 2019

Wildfires
Firefighters continue to make good progress mopping up and securing wildfire perimeters. The recent rain showers are not enough to put the fires out. Fire behavior has mitigated some, however smoke is still being produced with heavier concentrations in the afternoon hours. Storms moving into the zone may bring lighting that could cause additional wildfires in the area. Any increase in wildfire activity could lead to more abundant smoke.
Smoke
Smoke has the ability to travel many hundreds of miles with the air currents in the atmosphere. Just because there are no active fires near you doesn’t mean you may not be impacted by smoke. Smoke production from the wildfires on the Osceola National Forest should be heaviest in the afternoon after the day has heated up. If the smoke mixes with the local fog being produced due to high relative humidity, then visibility could decrease dramatically. Use cation when traveling near wildfire operations and watch for equipment on the roadways.
Prescribed Fire
Prescribed fire is one of the best tools available to wildfire managers to help reduce fire risk and maintain a healthy ecosystem. The Big Gum Wilderness Prescribed Fire on the Osceola National Forest continues to smolder and burn within the perimeter. Smoke remains light, but as the prescribed fire burns through dead and down fuels, smoke production may increase. Fire managers are monitoring the situation closely each day.

Lake City
Yesterday Lake City had good air quality throughout the day. Off and on showers today should help maintain that good air quality. Southwest winds will push any smoke to the northeast and away from the area. If lighting starts new
fires in the area the air quality could change rapidly.
White Springs
The White Springs area should not notice much smoke impacts today. If lighting starts new fires in the area air quality could change rapidly. Air quality has hovered around the good to moderate range for several days now however, today should be in the good range.

Wildfires
There are five wildfires burning in the area of Osceola National Forest that firefighters are actively engaging. Firefighters are continuing to mop up and secure firelines daily. With the dry weather and heat fires continue to burn out within the perimeter however, firefighters are staying diligent and taking action where it can safely be done.
Smoke
Smoke will continue to be present until significant rain moves into the area. Nighttime hours will have the highest concentrations of smoke near the ground. Areas with water corridors can trap smoke in heavier concentrations and act as transportation paths for smoke. As the day heats up smoke should rise and move to the northeast.
Roadway Safety
Motorist along Interstate 10 are advised to drive with headlights on and, watch for firefighting equipment in the area. Smoke may settle on roadways and highways in the early morning hours after midnight. The presence of local fog and humidity mixed with smoke can reduce visibility even more. Drive with caution and reduce speeds when appropriate.
Lake City and White Springs: Southwest winds today should keep any smoke in the area moving to the northeast. Smoke impacts should remain light to none during the day however, any new wildfires that start could impact air quality for the area. Air quality will hover between good and moderate today. Smoke from various fires may be contributing to the moderate air quality in the White Springs area due to dry conditions across the northern part of the state.

Osceola National Forest
Big Gum Swamp Wilderness Prescribed Burn
On May 9, 2019 the Osceola National Forest conducted a 257-acre prescribed burn in the Big Gum Swamp Wilderness. That fire continues to burn on the east side of the wilderness, consuming vegetation which was previously too wet to burn completely. These pockets have dried out due to the recent hot weather. Reburn is also occurring.
Heavy smoke may come from this area as unburned fuels continue to burn. Firefighters are patrolling and monitoring the wilderness. The fire has not escaped the prescribed fire boundaries. No new wildfires are burning in the Big Gum Swamp Wilderness.
Hot, dry weather is expected to continue for the next several days and motorists are asked to exercise caution when driving through the forest because of the increased firefighter presence and smoke that could be on the roadways.
