P515 and Lionshead Fire Update Sep 5 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Warm Springs, Oregon - This update is for the P-515 and Lionshead Fires, burning on the Warm Springs Reservation.  Both fires are being managed for full suppression.Current Status:  The perimeter of the P-515 Fire is completely lined. Hand crews will improve existing containment lines, locate and mitigate hazard trees and grid and patrol for spot fires within existing hand and dozer lines to meet agency standards.

The Lionshead Fire is now 11,777 acres and 31% contained.  The fire remains within the control lines on the northern, eastern, and southern perimeters, where crews are mopping up and securing control lines. Active fire continues within the Whitewater River drainage, pushing westward. The southwest flank of the fire has crossed Parker Creek. A thermal inversion, resulting in poor visibility, limited the use of helicopters on the fire yesterday.

Today’s Operations: In the southwest section of the Lionshead Fire, noted for its steep and complex terrain, crews will scout for safety zones and opportunities for indirect and contingency line construction. Fire crews face continued challenges due to the difficult terrain, high temperatures and dry conditions. Masticators are being used to improve roads in the area to serve as primary or contingency lines. Elsewhere on the fire, crews are conducting mop up operations along all containment lines and spot fires.

Weather and Fire Behavior:  A low pressure system, dipping south from Canada, will be accompanied by gusty winds and even drier air. This will put the incident area in near - Red Flag Warning weather conditions by  Monday.  Gusty winds and fingers of dry continuous fuel in Milk Creek, Parker Creek and Whitewater River drainages, on the fires western edge, could trigger spot fires and test control lines.

Closures:
Trout Lake Road at pavement end; Road B-140 at Potter’s Pond; Road B210 and Road P-500.All trails south of Trout Lake, west of M-120 Metolius Bench, east of Mt. Jefferson, and north of J-195 will be closed to the public. Tenino Road (P-200) is closed to the public, with only fire personnel and residents permitted. See Willamette and Deschutes N.F. websites for trail and area closures.

A Temporary Flight Restriction is in place over the P-515 and Lionshead Fires. Wildfires are a No Drone Zone.

COVID-19: Our highest priority is the safety of the public and all wildland fire personnel. To keep firefighters and communities healthy and safe during the P-515 and Lionshead Fires, all fire personnel are expected to follow recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This includes limiting public access to the Incident Command Post (ICP) at the Warm Springs Fairgrounds. While COVID-19 circumstances are rapidly evolving, and federal agency guidance continues to adapt with the situation, NW Team 10 is prepared for wildland fire activity during this time.
Prevention Message: The public is urged to drive cautiously this Labor Day Weekend as fire crews continue to travel on the highways working on the Lionshead and P-515 fires.

Current Status:  The P-515 fire remains in mop up and patrol status. Resources no longer needed on P-515 are assisting crews on the Lionshead fire. As resources reach their 14-day limit, they are being demobilized as appropriate to meet operational needs.

The Lionshead Fire is now 9,989 acres and 31% contained.  The fire has progressed farther to the west and southwest, moving up the Whitewater River and Milk Creek drainages.  The fire has pushed the southwest flank, crossing an established dozer line. Air resources have continued to work on slowing spread, with multiple heavy air tankers dropping retardant on the southern flank throughout the afternoon.   Helicopter resources, including the Air National Guard supported ground resources throughout the afternoon, yesterday.

Today’s Operations: Air resources will continue to support ground crews on the southwestern flank to slow spread, as crews work to determine possible fire line locations in the southwest flank. On the NW flank, crews will continue to look for opportunities to extend line to the west. Fire crews face continued challenges due to the difficult terrain, high temperatures and dry conditions.

Weather and Fire Behavior:  Transport winds will push smoke to the northeast with winds to 13 mph, and lower elevation gusts to 20 mph.   Temperatures will be 15 to 20 degrees above average with slightly cooler temperatures at higher elevations. Abundant dry fuels, difficult terrain and persistent burning conditions with very active fire behavior into the overnight hours is expected.

P515 and Lionshead Fires Update Sep 2 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

This update is for the P-515 Fire and Lionshead Fire burning on the Warm Springs Reservation. Both fires are being managed for full suppression.

The P-515 Fire is in patrol status. Today, Eric Knerr’s NW Team 7 will transition management of the fire at 6:00 p.m. to incoming NW Team 10 (Alan Lawson). Northwest Team 7 would like to thank the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs and Madras community for their support during this incident.

Current Status: The Lionshead Fire is now 8,518 acres and 30% contained. The fire continues to burn to the west and southwest, moving up the White Water River and Milk Creek drainages. Air resources are engaged on the northwest and southwest corners of the fire. Dozers and masticators constructed the fire line further west on both areas.

Lionshead: The Lionshead Fire continues to push on the NW and SW corners, spotting and slopping-over daily. Every day the firefighters have lined and secured those areas under difficult conditions. The north, east, and south flanks of the fire continue to be more and more secure. We continue to look for opportunities to successfully contain the difficult west flank of the fire. The terrain, weather and record dry forest fuels have made this a challenge but the fire fighters have done an excellent job, and Incident Management Team 7 wants to thank them for all of the hard work.

Weather and Fire Behavior: A gradual warming trend is expected, with decreasing humidity. Temperatures will increase into the upper 80’s to around 90. Abundant dry fuels, difficult terrain and persistent burning conditions are expected. Rapid heat buildup is expected, with the potential for torching on slopes, that can produce upslope finger runs and downwind spotting.

Closures: Trout Lake Road at pavement end; Road B140 at Potter’s Pond; Road B210 and Road P-500. All trails south of Trout Lake, west of M-120 Metolious Bench, east of Mt. Jefferson, and north of J-195 will be closed to the public. Tenino Road (P-200) is closed to the public, with only fire personnel and residents are allowed.

Evacuations: There are currently no evacuation orders associated with the P-515 or Lionshead Fires.

COVID-19: Precautionary measures have been implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19. These measures include daily temperature screenings, mandatory use of face coverings, social distancing, and implementing more virtual work. Public and firefighter safety are a top priority. Prevention Message: Breathe easy, prevent wildfires.
