P515 and Lionshead Fire Updates Aug 26 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

This update is for the P-515 Fire and Lionshead Fire burning on the Warm Springs Reservation. Both fires are being managed for full suppression.

Current Situation: The P-515 Fire is now 4,609 acres and 50% contained. Yesterday, minimal fire activity allowed crews to make good progress on securing the fire perimeter, with mop up occurring in all divisions.

The Lionshead Fire is now 3,059 acres and 8% contained. Spot fires on the south side of Whitewater River moved east up slope towards the J-100 road. Firefighters conducted a successful burn out operation ahead of the advancing fire front on portions of the J-200 road. Fire managers were pleased with the progress made on the direct and indirect line along the P-440 road on the northern flank.

P-515 Fire: Today, resources plan to focus their mop-up efforts on concentrated sources of heat near the perimeter of the fire. Firefighters will work to secure and improve the depth of mop up operations on all flanks and identifying locations for fire suppression repair work.

Lionshead Fire: Firefighters will continue direct and indirect burn out operations to better secure the northern flank.  The intent of the strategic burn out operation along the J-200 road is to remove pockets of fuel prior to the fire reaching the road as a point to hold the fire.  Crews on the southern flank will prep other sections of the J-200 road for ongoing firing operations.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Both fire behavior and weather will be similar to yesterday. We expect down valley winds (east) 2-7 mph in the Whitewater River drainage with gusts up to 12 mph. Temperatures in the 70’s, and humidity in the upper teens are forecast for today.  Flare-ups are likely in unburned fuels near control lines and there is a potential for group torching in heavy fuels under  tree canopies.

Closures: Trout Lake Road at pavement end; Road B140 at Potter’s Pond; Road B210 and Road P-500.All trails south of Trout Lake, west of M-120 Metolious Bench, east of Mt. Jefferson, and north of J-195 will be closed to the public. Also, Tenino Road (P-200) will be closed to the public, only fire personnel and residents are allowed on Tenino Road (P-200).

Evacuations: A Level 1 Evacuation (Get Ready) is in effect for residents on Trout Lake Road west of US-26.

COVID-19: Precautionary measures have been implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19. These measures include daily temperature screenings, mandatory use of face coverings, social distancing, and implementing more virtual work. Public and firefighter safety are a top priority.

Prevention Message: Do your part to help our heroes.

P515 and Lionshead Fire Updates Aug 25 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

This update is for the P-515 Fire and Lionshead Fire burning on the Warm Springs Reservation. Both fires are being managed for full suppression.

Current Situation: Yesterday, firefighters on the P-515 Fire improved the fire line by extinguishing and removing burning material along the line, felling snags, and moving logs to reduce their potential to roll downhill (mop up). Crews continue to secure and strengthen fire lines on the north, south, and west ends of the fire. On the east flank, firefighters secured the last mile of line overnight by eliminating unburnt fuels between the fire’s edge and containment line through burn operations.

Yesterday, crews on the Lionshead Fire used aviation assets on the southern flank after the smoke cleared to support on-ground efforts. Dozers were used on the north side of the fire to go both direct and indirect to extend the fire line to the west towards Lionshead Peak. Firefighters located a spot fire on the southerm flank and were able to contain that spot.

P-515 Fire: Today, resources plan to focus their mop-up efforts on concentrated sources of heat along the southern and northern perimeter of the fire. Resources will work on the western flank to better secure the fire line.

Lionshead Fire: Resources will conduct direct and indirect operations to improve the P-440 road in preparation for burning out the northern flank and prepping the eastern flank to secure the fire line. Crews will continue road prep with masticators and hand work along the southern perimeter of the fire. A masticator is a machine used to grind, chip, or break apart fuels such as brush, small trees and slash into small pieces.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Light winds with temperatures in the upper 70’s is forecast for today. Lower elevations will see more humidity than in past days. Persistent burning conditions will be evident with dry fuels resistant to fire suppression. Firefighters may see short runs on steep slopes and torching with spot fires to a quarter mile.

Closures: Trout Lake Road at pavement end; Road B140 at Potter’s Pond; Road B210 and Road P-500. All trails south of Trout Lake, west of M-120 Metolious Bench, east of Mt.

Prevention Message: Reduce wildfire risk, know your local fire restrictions.

P515 and Lionshead Fire Updates Aug 24 2020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

This update is for the P-515 Fire and Lionshead Fire burning on the Warm Springs Reservation. Both fires are being managed for full suppression.

Current Situation: Yesterday’s inversion allowed firefighters to better secure fire lines around the P-515 Fire. Crews conducted burning operations in the northeastern flank to clean unburned pockets of fuel. The swing shift continued burning operations into the night on the western perimeter of the fire.

Yesterday, crews on the Lionshead Fire prepped roads east of the fire along the J-100 and J-200 roads.  Direct line was also prepped on the P-440 road.  The spot fire south of the Whitewater River was actively suppressed using aerial resources.

P-515 Fire: Containment is now up to 30% on the P-515 Fire. Today, firefighters will strengthen and expand control lines on all flanks of the fire. If conditions allow, crews will burn out along the fire on the northern perimeter to help secure the line. Firefighters will continue to extinguish spot fires on the northeast of the fire.

Lionshead Fire: Firefighters will improve the J-200 and J-100 roads to hold the fire to the north and west of these roads. Burning operations will connect indirect line on the southeastern flank and northern perimeter of the fire.  Fire managers’ objective is to keep the main fire north of the Whitewater River to protect to water quality and fish habitat.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Cloud cover and continued smoke are forecast for today which will prevent full potential for fire behavior. Cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity are expected.  Today’s inversion will last into the afternoon. Both fires may see rain showers later tonight. Firefighters may see occasional torching of trees and spotting of fires up to a quarter mile.

Closures:  Trout Lake Road at pavement end; Road B140 at Potter’s Pond; Road B210 and Road P-500.

All trails south of Trout Lake, west of M-120 Metolious Bench, east of Mt. Jefferson, and north of J-195 will be closed to the public.  Also, Tenino   Road (P-200) will be closed to the public, only fire personnel and residents are allowed on Tenino Road (P-200).
