Bighorn Fire – June 14, 2020 Morning Update

Firefighters to contend with strong winds today

Acres: 12,345

Percent Containment: 11%

Start Date: June 5, 2020

Cause: Lightning

Origin Location: Santa Catalina Mountains

Personnel: 560

Injuries: 3 minor heat-related illnesses

Jurisdiction: Coronado National Forest, including portions of the Pusch Ridge Wilderness

Resources: 6 hotshot crews, 5 Type 2 hand crews, 1 Type 1 engine, 21 Type 3 engines, 1 Type 4 engine, 19 Type 6 engines, 4 Type 1 helicopters, 1 Type 2 helicopter, 2 Type 3 helicopters, 11 water tenders

Strong southwest winds with gusts up to 30 mph will be the main challenge to firefighting operations today and may affect the ability to utilize air resources in the afternoon. The fire will be most active in the Pusch Ridge Wilderness around Romero Canyon and Cathedral Rock, with dark smoke visible from the Tucson metropolitan area.

Strong winds will also increase the probability of the fire spotting outside of the current perimeter. Initial attack crews are at the ready to suppress any new starts.

The community can expect to see an increased firefighter presence on and around Mt. Lemmon as crews will be constructing fire line and identifying holding features where safety risks are minimized and there is a greater chance of success in containing the fire on the mountain. In the community of Summerhaven, crews will assess potential threats to homes and infrastructure, identify access routes and develop contingency plans in the event of fire spreading into the area. Drivers and cyclists on the Catalina Highway are urged to travel with caution and make way for emergency equipment.

Crews will continue to closely monitor the fire’s southern and northern flanks to ensure that threats to communities in the areas of East Golder Ranch and Ventana Canyon are minimized.

Residents in the vicinity of East Golder Ranch Drive and East Rollins Road remain in “GO! – Evacuate” status.

SET evacuation notices for portions of the Catalina Foothills, Golder Ranch and Oro Valley remain in place. View a map of the evacuation areas at pimamaps.maps.arcgis.com. An American Red Cross evacuation center is open at Canyon del Oro High School, 25 W Calle Concordia. Visit pima.gov/bighorn for the most up-to-date information on evacuation notices and county resources.

Wildfires are a No Drone Zone. The temporary flight restriction in place over the fire area has been expanded to account for crews working around Mt. Lemmon. Every time a drone is seen near the fire all aircraft are grounded until we can be sure the drone is clear of the area. For more information visit Know Before You Fly, http://knowbeforeyoufly.org.

Closures remain in effect. Catalina State Park is closed. Large portions of the Coronado National Forest, Santa Catalina Ranger District near the fire are restricted. View the closure order and map at inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/closures/6741/.

Bighorn Fire – June 13, 2020 Evening Update

Crews use burnout operations to protect communities north of the Bighorn Fire

Acres: 11,500
  Percent Containment: 11%
  Start Date: June 5, 2020
  Cause: Lightning
  Origin Location: Santa Catalina Mountains
  Personnel: 560
  Injuries: 3 minor heat-related illnesses
Jurisdiction: Coronado National Forest, including portions of the Pusch Ridge Wilderness
Resources: 6 hotshot crews, 5 Type 2 hand crews, 1 Type 1 engine, 21 Type 3 engines, 1 Type 4 engine, 19 Type 6 engines, 4 Type 1 helicopters, 1 Type 2 helicopter, 2 Type 3 helicopters, 11 water tenders   The Incident Management Team continues to bolster the resources available for night operations and intends to build from the success of last night’s burnout operation in the area of East Golder Ranch. The fire is expected to be active in the areas of Upper Ventana Canyon, Kimball Peak, and Romero Canyon, into the nighttime hours with increased smoke and visible flames.

Crews engaged the fire near Cargodera Canyon today, south of the East Golder Ranch area conducting additional firing operations to direct the fire away from the values and risk (such as homes) and keep it up in the high county. Heavy assistance from helicopters and air tankers supported crews on the ground, protecting the properties of East Golder Ranch, Catalina State Park, and the Trico powerline that provides electricity to Summerhaven.

In the interest of safety, Trico has deenergized some power lines and is currently serving the Mt. Lemmon area using a backup generator.
NO PRIVATELY OWNED DRONES ALLOWED IN THE FIRE AREA. Again, drones have been seen near the fire area. If you fly, our air operations will need to be grounded. Your hobby is not worth another person’s life or risking the property of your neighbor.
Residents in the vicinity of East Golder Ranch Drive and East Rollins Road remain in “GO! – Evacuate” status. Incident Commander John Pierson emphasized the importance of heeding GO evacuation notices: “it’s safer for you and safer for the firefighters that are protecting your property in the event we need to engage near your home.”

Bighorn Fire – June 13, 2020 Morning Update

Crews work through the night to complete East Golder Ranch burnout operation

Acres: 10,367 Percent Containment: 10%

 Start Date: June 5, 2020

 Cause: Lightning

 Origin Location: Santa Catalina Mountains

 Personnel: 550

Injuries: 3 minor heat related illnesses

Jurisdiction: Coronado National Forest, including portions of the Pusch Ridge Wilderness

 Resources: 7 hotshot crews, 4 Type 2 hand crews, 1 Type 1 engine, 18 Type 3 engines, 1 Type 4 engine, 16 Type 6 engines, 4 Type 1 helicopters, 1 Type 2 helicopter, 2 Type 3 helicopters, 11 water tenders

Overnight, firefighters took advantage of cooler temperatures to conduct a burnout operation near East Golder Ranch, tying in to nearby holding features including washes and OHV trails to create a buffer between homes and the fire. Crews will continue working to secure a fire line between Catalina State Park and Golder Ranch today, making as much progress as they can in the morning hours before the afternoon temperatures and direct sunlight cause an increase in fire activity.

Fire is established in upper Ventana Canyon and Romero Canyon where it is expected to continue growing upslope towards Window Rock. Crews are working in the areas above to identify holding features, where firefighters would have the greatest chance of success in halting the fire’s progression. Additional resources will be arriving to the incident throughout the weekend to support this work around Mt. Lemmon and the community of Summerhaven.

While the fire is expected to be most active to the north and east today, crews remain vigilant on the south edge near Pima Canyon and Ventana Canyon and are prepared to engage the fire and take suppression action if needed. A strong aerial contingent will continue to support crews on the ground throughout the day, dropping water and retardant.

Bighorn Fire – June 12, 2020 Evening Update

Extreme temperatures stoke increased fire activity north towards Golder Ranch

Acres: 8,950 Percent Containment: 10% Start Date: June 5, 2020 Cause: Lightning Origin Location: Santa Catalina Mountains Personnel: 550
Jurisdiction: Coronado National Forest, including portions of the Pusch Ridge Wilderness Resources: 7 hotshot crews, 4 Type 2 hand crews, 1 Type 1 engine, 18 Type 3 engines, 1 Type 4 engine, 16 Type 6 engines, 4 Type 1 helicopters, 1 Type 2 helicopter, 2 Type 3 helicopters, 11 water tenders   The northeast flank of the Bighorn Fire stretched into lower portions of Romero Canyon today, producing smoke east of Catalina State Park. Multiple helicopters and air tankers worked in the area dousing the fire and dropping retardant to slow its spread. Although firefighters are unable to engage the fire directly in that area due to the rough terrain, crews have been scouting more accessible land at higher elevations and have identified holding features in the event of continued fire spread to the northeast. While smoke is highly visible, the Oro Valley Police Department warns drivers that stopping on Oracle Road to view the fire is dangerous for the drivers, the community, and the fire apparatus moving through the area.   Tonight’s operations will focus near the community of Golder Ranch, where fire activity picked up today due to extremely hot and dry conditions. Humidity recovery is expected to be higher than previous nights, but not high enough to make a significant impact on fire activity. Crews will work through the night to monitor the fire perimeter and protect values at risk.    The Pima County Sherriff’s Department has issued a “GO! – Evacuate” notice for residents in the vicinity of East Golder Ranch Drive and East Rollins Road. View a map of the evacuation area at pimamaps.maps.arcgis.com. An American Red Cross evacuation center is open at Canyon del Oro High School at 25 W Calle Concordia.   Successful burnout operations conducted near Pima Canyon Thursday resulted in the Catalina Foothills area formerly set to the “GO! – Evacuate” being downgraded to "SET - Be Alert” by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Residents who evacuated may return to their homes. SET evacuation notices for portions of the Catalina Foothills and Oro Valley remain in place. View a complete map of the SET areas at pimamaps.maps.arcgis.com.   Closures remain in effect. Catalina State Park is closed.
