GILA/LAS CRUCES IMT PREPARES TO TRANSFER MANAGEMENT OF MANGUM FIRE

At 7:00 A.M. tomorrow the Gila/Las Cruces Incident Management Team will transfer command of theMangum Fire to the North Kaibab Ranger District.
Yesterday crews patrolled and insured that containment lines were secure. Supplies were back hauled and most of the heavy equipment and engines were released. Some road repair remains to be accomplished. The number of firefighters continues to be reduced. Weather will be warm and dry again today, with “red flag” warnings in place for strong winds and single digit relative humidity. There is a high potential for active fire behavior. Firefighters will be vigilant for threats to containment lines as they patrol the fire perimeter.

Safety: Motorists should be aware that many large firefighting vehicles will be traveling on local roads as they exit the fire area.

Closures: Forest Road 22 is closed between road 422 and road 429. Highways 67 and 89A are open to public travel. The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is now open (see: www.facebook.com/GrandCanyonNationalPark/). The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management have amended closure orders for the North Kaibab Ranger District and Bureau of Land Management land east of Fredonia. FIREFIGHTERS SEARCH FOR NEW FIRE STARTS AFTER THUNDER STORMS PASS
Yesterday crews neared completion of suppression repair.  Another lightning ignition was discovered outside the Mangum Fire containment lines. The fire was cooled off by helicopter bucket drops, and lined by firefighters on the ground. Today firefighters will be patrolling the Mangum Fire perimeter, looking for “sleeper” fires started by Friday’s lightning storms.  Crews will also be removing hazard trees, and taking a second look at suppression damages, to ensure no needed repairs have been missed.  Warm and dry conditions are forecasted again today.  Fire activity is expected to me minimal, but conditions are right for active fire.

Safety: The Fourth of July weekend is winding down, and heavy traffic can be expected as tourists exit the area.  Motorists should be alert for the presence of firefighting vehicles on local roads.

FIREFIGHTERS SEARCH FOR NEW FIRE STARTS AFTER THUNDER STORMS PASS

Yesterday crews continued with suppression repair, and constructed fire line around pockets of smoking fuel adjacent to Highway 89A.   During the afternoon a very small lightning ignition was discovered outside the Mangum Fire containment lines.  Firefighters quickly extinguished this fire.  Today firefighters will be patrolling the fire perimeter, looking for new fires started by yesterday afternoon’s lightning storms.  Crews will continue suppression repair, grading and repairing damaged roads, filling and re-contouring hand lines and chipping woody debris.  Warm and dry conditions return today with calm winds.  Fire activity is expected to me minimal.

FIREFIGHTERS ANTICIPATE THUNDER STORMS AS SUPPRESSION REPAIR CONTINUES

Yesterday crews continued with suppression repair, while monitoring areas where fuel is still burning. Fire crews will continue suppression repair today, grading and repairing damaged roads, filling and re-contouring hand lines and dozer lines, chipping woody debris, and felling and removing standing dead trees that pose a risk to public and firefighter safety.  Fire activity is expected to be minimal, but there is an increased potential for widely scattered thunder storms, and a 40% chance of wetting rain this afternoon.  Strong gusty outflow winds from any storms that develop could increase the intensity of the fire and threaten containment lines.  There is also a possibility of new fires started by lightning.

Safety: The Fourth of July weekend is upon us, and tourist traffic is increasing.  Motorists should be alert for the presence of firefighting vehicles on local roads.

Closures: Forest Road 22 is closed between road 422 and road 429.  Highways 67 and 89A are open to public travel. MANGUM FIRE ACTIVITY MODERATES AS SUPPRESSION REPAIR CONTINUES

Winds subsided yesterday, and limited fire behavior resulted in no growth in acreage on the fire. However, helicopters made a few bucket drops on a flare up in the Burro Springs area.  Fire crews will continue to focus on suppression repair today.  Low humidity and extremely dry fuels present the potential for active fire behavior.  Interior creeping and torching remain in isolated areas of the fire, which are being monitored to prevent threats to containment lines.

Safety:  As the Fourth of July weekend approaches, tourist traffic is increasing.  Motorists should be alert for the presence of firefighting vehicles on local roads.
