MANGUM FIRE
Location: origin 30 miles south of Fredonia
Start Date: June 6, 2020
Acres: 71,450
Cause: under investigation
Total Personnel: 365
Containment: 67%
Vegetation: Timber and piñon/juniper with grass/shrub understory
Resources: Three Type 1 20-person handcrews, four 20-person initial attack handcrews, 15 fire engines, 4 helicopters, 8 dozers, and 16 water tenders.
MANGUM FIRE ACTIVITY MODERATES AS SUPPRESSION REPAIR CONTINUES
Winds subsided yesterday, and limited fire behavior resulted in no growth in acreage on the fire. However, helicopters made a few bucket drops on a flare up in the Burro Springs area. Fire crews will continue to focus on suppression repair today. Low humidity and extremely dry fuels present the potential for active fire behavior. Interior creeping and torching remain in isolated areas of the fire, which are being monitored to prevent threats to containment lines.
Safety: As the Fourth of July weekend approaches, tourist traffic is increasing. Motorists should be alert for the presence of firefighting vehicles on local roads.
Closures: Forest Road 22 is closed between road 422 and road 429. Highways 67 and 89A are open to public travel. The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is now open (see: www.facebook.com/GrandCanyonNationalPark/). The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management have amended closure orders for the North Kaibab Ranger District and Bureau of Land Management land east of Fredonia. As predicted, strong wind gusts yesterday tested fire lines constructed over the last three weeks on the Mangum fire. Today firefighters will continue conducting suppression repair and secure the fire’s edge while positioned to respond to another round of red flag conditions. Two residences along House Rock remain in “Ready” status.
Tuesday the Gila Las Cruces Zone incident management team, led by Incident Commandeer Pedro Valenzuela, will assume command from Incident Commander Dave Gesser’s type 2 team. Adequate resources will remain with the fire to complete suppression repair and continue to manage its security.

Yesterday the northeast corner of the fire remained active, with crews continuing to flank the fire with line construction and direct attack where possible. A smoke column developed over the NE section during late afternoon as interior fuels were consumed. On other sections of the fire crews extinguished hot spots, conducted suppression repair, and improved fire lines. Power was restored to Grand Canyon National Park by late afternoon. Efforts continued to mitigate hazardous trees along highway 89A as the Team tentatively hopes to reopen Highways 89A and 67 for public travel by Sunday. Due to a previous error in calculation, the corrected containment percentage has been reduced to 46%.
Today firefighters will focus on continued suppression on the NE side. Crews working controlled sections of the fire will conduct suppression repair on the remainder of the perimeter. The weather forecast is for changing conditions with another wind event forecast over the weekend.
