Additional Resources Arrive on Fire

Current Situation: Yesterday additional resources arrived to the Decker Fire. The Pike and Alpine hotshot crews and a K-MAX helicopter will join the operation today. On the west side of the fire, crews completed construction of contingency line between Saw Mill Gulch over to Round Hill Trail. The new Incident Commander, Justin Yankey, arrived and began briefing with the current team. Transfer of command will occur tonight.

As the active part of the fire continues to back down Simmons Peak, crews will look for opportunities to employ direct tactics. Firing operations with aerial bucket support may be used to bring the fire down to the Rainbow Trail control feature near Bear Creek. A temporary flight restriction (TFR) has been issued for the air space above the fire.

Alpine Hotshots and the Juniper Valley hand crew will continue removing fuels along the Rainbow Trail between Bear Creek and Columbine. Pike Hotshots and Wind Cave Engine 629 will scout options for direct line to tie fire into natural control features including the wet drainage south of Bear Creek near county road 101. On the west side of the fire, crews will look for opportunities to secure the edge between Saw Mill Gulch over to Round Hill Trail.

Today’s forecast calls for sunny skies, warm temperatures and low relative humidity. Without clouds, the fire will be more active. The dead and down fuel component is the main driver for fire activity. Fire behavior is mostly creeping, smoldering with some isolated torching and short runs.

The U.S. Forest Service estimates that areas within the Wilderness have up to 80% tree mortality from beetle-kill and blowdown. The Decker Fire is being managed to remove these high-risk fuels from the landscape for ecological benefit and to reduce the risk for catastrophic wildfire in the future.

The fire may be visible from both the US 50 and US 285 corridors. Motorists are asked to not stop in the roadway and be clear of the roadway before stopping to observe the fire. Partly Sunny Skies Expected to Moderate Fire Behavior

Current Situation: Yesterday west winds along with clear skies, warm temperatures, and low relative humidity caused the fire on the east side to become active. A spot fire on the east side of Simmons Peak - first spotted on September 14 - had accounted for most of the fire’s growth on Sunday. There was little growth on the west side of the fire. Last night, an infrared flight indicated the fire grew to 1015 acres – an increase of 78 acres. The fire remains within the Wilderness on the east side of the fire.

On Sunday, crews completed the contingency line between Bear Creek and Howard along the Rainbow Trail. Today the Juniper Valley crew and the Wind Cave engine will focus on the section of contingency line between Bear Creek and Columbine along the Rainbow Trail. Crews will also continue constructing contingency line on the west side of the fire between Saw Mill Gulch over to Round Hill Trail. The Teton Wildland Fire Module is being repositioned to integrate into the operations that are ongoing on the east side of the fire.

Sunny, Dry Conditions to Persist Over Decker Fire on Sunday

Current Situation: On Saturday, sunny skies spurred fire activity on the Decker Fire, leading to some light growth that continued removing dead and down fuels from the landscape. The fire grew slightly on Saturday, gaining 37 acres on Saturday. Current Situation: Yesterday, the Decker Fire remained relatively calm despite a Red Flag being issued midday. On Friday, the fire did not increase its perimeter and it remains at 900 acres.

Warmer, Drier Weather and Wind Expected Over Decker Fire on Friday

Current Situation: The Decker Fire was more active yesterday than earlier in the week. Spot fires in upper Bear Creek became active and were visible from local communities. One spot fire on the east side of the fire burned upslope to the ridgeline, towards the main body of the fire. When the area became shaded later in the day, the fire backed down the slope onto itself. The San Juan Hotshots continue to monitor the spot fires on east side of the fire and will engage those as needed. An infrared flight last night indicated the fire grew to 900 acres and showed a few pockets of intense heat and scattered heat along with some isolated heat.

The dead and down trees continue to be the main fuel for the fire. With the expected clear skies, low humidity, and high winds, lighter fuels such as shrubs and grasses may be more prone to burning. The fire is expected to be more active than the past several days, with the possibility of more smoke impacts to local communities. Crews continue constructing the contingency lines on both the west and east sides of the fire. Operations along the Rainbow Trail will not impede the Banana Belt race. A public meeting was held at the Poncha Springs Town Hall on Thursday. The community learned information on the fire, short term strategies for managing the fire, and possible upcoming weather events that may affect on the fire. The US Forest Service estimates that areas within the Wilderness have up to 80% tree mortality from beetle-kill and blowdown. The Decker Fire is being managed to remove these high-risk fuels from the landscape for ecological benefit and to reduce the risk for catastrophic wildfire in the future.

The fire may be visible from both the US 50 and US 285 corridors. Motorists are asked to not stop in the roadway and be clear of the roadway before stopping to observe the fire. Please do not call 911 to report fire behavior on the Decker Fire or to request fire information. A fire information line is available for fire updates. Please call 911 for emergencies only.

Weather & Fuel Conditions: Today will be mostly sunny with isolated thunderstorms after 3 p.m. Temperature will remain around 57 degrees with humidity as low as 21 percent. Breezy, southwest winds 18-22 mph with gust around 40 mph are expected. Gusty and erratic winds are expected if thunderstorms develop in the fire area. A Red Flag Warning has been issued in the fire area today.

Evacuations and Closures: There are no evacuations or closures at this time. Smoke may settle into the US Highway 50 corridor in the late afternoons or evenings. Drivers are encouraged to reduce speed near the fire if smoke affects visibility. There are no fire restrictions in Saguache, Chaffee, or Fremont counties at this time.

Una reunión pública ocurría a 5:00 p.m. hoy, jueves, 19 de septiembre en la alcaldía de Poncha Springs.

Situación actual:

La actividad del incendio aumento ligeramente en miércoles resultando con un poco más acres de fuego. El incendio continua quemar áreas sin quemada en dentro del perímetro del incendio. El incendio creció a 885 acres, según un vuelo infrarrojo en la noche.

Hoy, el cuadrillo continúa construir líneas de contingencia en el flanco oeste del fuego a largo de la frontera de BLM.

El cuadrillo también continúa construyendo líneas de contingencia a lo largo del Rainbow Trail oriental del incendio. La sección del Rainbow Trail por el “Banana Belt Race” en sábado no será afectado. Los usadores del camino pueden esperar retrasos en jueves y viernes si las operaciones continúan ser activo.
