Bryce Fire Update for Tuesday 05 13 2025
Related Incident: Bryce Fire
Publication Type: News
Summary: Overnight, cooler temperatures and increased relative humidity levels helped keep fire activity minimal through Monday’s night shift. Two hotshot crews worked to hold, improve, and secure any uncontained line along the east flank of the fire. Last night engines patrolled across the fire’s perimeter, including around the structures monitoring for any issues or concerns that could potentially threaten the line during Tuesday’s critical fire weather.
For today’s operational period, crews continue securing line and checking for any visible concerns to containment lines. Another Red Flag Warning is forecast for Southeastern Arizona today, including Graham County and the fire area. High winds with gusts up to 40 mph could test established containment lines. The northernmost flank of the fire is a top priority today as crews work to clean up any areas of unburned fuel that could pose a threat to the line. Along the east flank, and due to yesterday’s high winds, the fire saw additional growth on that side. Spot fires are a concern for Tuesday with winds expected to pick up later in the afternoon. Heavy fuels are still smoldering within the fire’s interior and could result in isolated torching. The increased fire activity due to the critical fire weather could result in additional growth in areas where heavy fuels are inhibiting firefighter access for mop up operations. A multi-mission aircraft flight will take place today to more accurately map the perimeter and assess hotspots within the fire’s interior and along the edge. Some Bryce Fire resources have been designated to provide initial attack response for any new starts within the Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) to the support the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management and Bureau of Land Management.
Yesterday, the Graham County Office of Emergency Management downgraded the SET status to READY for those residents impacted by the fire. However, due to public and firefighter safety, Eden Road and River Road at the US 70 remains closed.
Stage 2 fire restrictions are in effect for southeastern Arizona on state, federal and some tribal lands. These restrictions include state, federal, and tribal lands within Graham County. Under Stage 2 restrictions, campfires, target shooting, and fireworks are not allowed. Target shooting and fireworks are never allowed on State Trust lands.
The human-caused fire started on Wednesday, May 7, near the communities of Pima and Eden. The next day the fire was 80% contained, but on Friday high winds spotted the fire over a nearly 30’ containment line on the north side. High winds coupled with the dense vegetation fueled the fire, fanning it out to the north and northeast. Multiple power and gas lines were damaged in the fire. There are no reports of damaged or destroyed structures.
Evacuations and Closures: No pre-evacuations or evacuations. Eden Road and River Road closed at US 70.
Weather: Red Flag Warning Tuesday from 10am to 8pm including Graham County and the Bryce Fire.
Safety: Due to aircraft use, a TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction) is in place over the fire. Firefighting aircraft and drones are a dangerous combination. Drones in the area could lead to accidents or slow down wildfire suppression operations. If you fly…we can’t.
Sawlog Fire Morning Update 05 13 2025
Related Incident: Sawlog
Publication Type: News
Incident Commander: Richard Griffin (Type 3 IC) and Kyle Errecart (Type 3 IC Trainee)
Location: 15 miles northeast of Wisdom, MT in the Sawlog Creek drainage
Start Date: 05/01/2025
Cause: Undetermined – under investigation
Size: 2,030 acres
Resources Assigned: 3 crews; 2 engines; 1 helicopter; 1 water tender
Total Personnel: 132
Containment: 94%
CURRENT STATUS/PLANNED ACTIONS:
Firefighters progressed with patrol and mop-up of the fire perimeter, reaching 94% containment. A helicopter relocated to the Wise River Helibase for the day, shortening the response time to provide any necessary medical support. The UAS module completed additional infrared (IR) heat-seeking missions to locate hot spots; zero areas of heat were found along the fire’s edge. Resource advisors from BLM and FS continue development of a repair plan based on their assessment of natural resource impacts due to suppression operations.
Firefighters have assessed an area northeast of the fire in the Walker Creek drainage that ties into a previously used fireline for the Alder Fire of 2021; the analysis will include the extent and type of suppression work necessary if the line were to be used in the future. The helicopters, housed in Butte for safe cover, are expected to remain there given the weather forecast. Excess resources no longer needed will demobilize and return to home units over the next few days. The Incident Command Post (ICP) at the Wisdom Airport will likely be dismantled by the end of Wednesday.
WEATHER, FUELS, AND FIRE BEHAVIOR:
Yesterday was another day of scattered rain showers, with only isolated pockets of wetting rain reaching the fire. Gusty winds up to 35 mph materialized in the afternoon hours. ICP and the fire area received significant precipitation during the overnight hours. Today’s weather calls for cloudy conditions, with the likelihood of a morning snow shower followed by widespread precipitation and wetting rains. Winds will be from the north to northwest, up to 10 mph.
Fire behavior was limited to mostly creeping; interior pockets of unburned fuel may continue to smolder. The fire is burning mainly in sagebrush and Lodgepole pine timber. The north-facing slopes in the area consist of a high “dead and downed” fuel component in a mixed conifer forest, and numerous “snags” or hazard trees are present. This fuel combination poses additional hazards for firefighters, affecting on-the-ground progress. Fuel conditions, during this time of year (pre-green up), are extremely dry.
The fire footprint from the 2021 Alder Fire is located to the east, and the fire footprint from the 2021 Christensen Fire lies to the south.
CLOSURES:
The Montana Fish, Wildfire and Parks has issued an emergency site closure for the Fishtrap Creek Fishing Access Site on the Big Hole River due to fire activity from the Sawlog Fire. The site is closed to public use from Mudd Creek Bridge to Sportsman’s Park.
For public safety reasons, the Bureau of Land Management has issued a temporary closure for the Sawlog dispersed camping area, located at the Big Hole River ford site. Specific closure language can be viewed on the Sawlog Fire Inciweb page, Closures tab.

Bryce Fire Update for Sunday 05 11 2025
Related Incident: Bryce Fire
Publication Type: News
Summary: A night shift consisting of engines and hotshot crews conducted successful firing operations along the east side of River Road, northeast of Fort Thomas. Crews stayed engaged in that area all day on Saturday, prepping the road for those operations. Firing operations, or backburns, are used to create a fire line ahead of the main fire. Resources then burn off the fuel between that line and the head to help slow the fire’s spread. Overnight crews also burned out around a home and other values at risk as part of structure and infrastructure protection. The northern containment line held through the night with successful holding operations along River Road in Fort Thomas. Due to high winds, the northernmost flank of the fire will be the primary focus and challenge for fire personnel today and the upcoming operational periods. While Saturday night’s firing operations added to the fire’s size, more accurate mapping puts the fire at 2,290 acres. It remains 25% contained. The Southeast Zone Type 3 Incident Management Team took command of the fire Saturday afternoon.
The fire displayed extreme fire behavior through the day on Saturday and into the late evening with torching and long-range spotting. Resources are utilizing direct and indirect tactics across the fire’s perimeter and where it’s safe to do so to establish containment line and keep the fire in check. A helicopter supported ground operations with bucket drops to cool down the fire’s edge to allow resources to safely engage. Hot, dry and windy conditions continue to play a role in the fire’s activity. The invasive salt cedar within the Gila River bottom also plays into the extreme fire behavior displayed over the last few days.
Resources are continuing efforts of keeping the fire out of Fort Thomas, keeping it north of the 70 and within its footprint within the riverbed. Other objectives include firefighter and public safety, along with protection of values at risk including, agricultural lands and infrastructure, mining and utility infrastructure, homes, and the railroad. Resources continue to hold, improve, and strengthen existing containment lines and will be scouting areas for a contingency dozer line. A contingency line acts as a backup or safety net if the fire jumps the main fireline.
SET, or pre-evacuation status remains in place for residents in the river corridor in the Fort Thomas area and for residents between Eden Road and Fort Thomas. US 70 remains open, but with ever-changing fire conditions, drivers should be aware of potential traffic delays or closures should conditions warrant. The fire started on Wednesday, May 7, and by the next day it was 160 acres with 80% containment. On Friday morning, high winds spotted the fire over a 25-30’ containment line on the north end. Those winds, coupled with the vegetation type, fueled the fire fanning it out to the north and northeast. Multiple power and gas lines were damaged in the fire. At this time, there are no reports of damaged or destroyed structures.
Evacuations and Closures: Per the Graham County Office of Emergency Management SET for homes between Eden Road and Fort Thomas on the north side of US 70. SET for all homes located in the river corridor in the Fort Thomas-area.
Weather: Increasing clouds with a high near 95. Breezy with a southeast wind 21-26 mph. Wind gusts forecast as high as 37 mph. A Fire Weather Watch is forecast for Monday.
Safety: Due to aircraft use, a TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction) is in place over the fire. Firefighting aircraft and drones are a dangerous combination. Drones in the area could lead to accidents or slow down wildfire suppression operations. If you fly…we can’t.
