Horse River Fire Quick Facts
Size: 20 acres
Location: E. of the Horse River, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
Containment: 0%
Cause: Lightning
Resources: Aircraft
Start Date: May 22, 2025
Planned Operations: Fire management staff will fly the fire this morning to assess current conditions, spread potential, and natural containment boundaries like swamps and rivers. Due to the fire’s remote location and very difficult access, aerial resources are being used as needed. Firefighter and public safety are the top priorities. The area is remote, over a mile off any main canoe travel route, and is a mix of swamp and forested landscape, so access is very challenging. Yesterday, public safety staff posted the portages around the fire to ensure the public doesn't enter the fire area.
National Weather Service Forecast: Today-A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 3pm and 5pm. Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 60. Calm wind becoming northeast around 5 mph. Tonight- A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 37. Southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm. Tomorrow-Patchy frost before 7am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 67. Calm wind becoming northeast around 5 mph.
Closures: An Emergency Forest Closure Order is in process to close the Winter Route Trail (mushing trail) between Jackfish Bay and Lower Basswood Falls. Paddlers in the area are advised to stay away from the area for their own safety. Currently, Basswood River and Horse River travel routes are open. Campsites on the Basswood River are still open. For public safety, the public should move directly through the area and be aware that conditions could change. Continue to follow the fire’s Inciweb page for current incident fire details and updates.
Air Operations: Aircraft are available and may be brought in to help support the fire. A reminder - flying drones over the fire is prohibited. If drones are detected near the fire, any air operations supporting the fire will stop. Drones are illegal in federally designated wilderness areas.
Overview: On May 22, 2025, aircraft detected smoke east of the Horse River, within a remote part of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Initial acreage was estimated at 5-10 acres, with 2-4’ flame lengths. Fire management staff identified the strike tree on a ridgetop where lightning struck, initiating the wildfire. The fire is burning in a mixed boreal forest with conifer (pine trees), and hardwood trees like birch and aspen. Blowdown is limited in the area. Ground access is very poor; safety of firefighters and the public are the top priorities.

Camp House and Jenkins Creek Fires Update
CAMP HOUSE FIRE
Size: 12,071 acres Location: Brimson, MN Personnel: 245
Start Date: 05/11/2025 Containment: 90% Cause: Under investigation
Firefighters took advantage of the lower winds over the last few days and made excellent progress securing the line. Strengthening containment line and mopping up (putting out smoldering debris) occurred around the perimeter of the Camp House Fire yesterday. Patrolling and mop-up will continue today. Some crews working on Camp House and Jenkins Fire will also be assigned to respond to any new fires that start in the area. Suppression repair will continue today. With fire activity significantly reduced and containment increasing, some resources are now being reassigned to an Initial Attack group in preparation for the holiday weekend and remain ready to respond to any new fire starts if they occur.
JENKINS CREEK FIRE
Size: 16,089 acres Location: T57N R13WSection 3 Personnel: 237
Start Date: 05/12/2025 Containment: 70% Cause: Human Caused
Handcrews worked around the fire’s perimeter on Friday, seeking out hotspots (areas that still have heat or were smoldering) and putting them out. Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) continued to be especially useful in locating the hotspots. Helicopters will continue to be available to assist firefighting operations, as needed, today and over the weekend. Clearing heavy debris that could fuel future wildfires remains a priority along the 113 Road, with mastication equipment continuing operations in that corridor today. Containment lines along the southwest and eastern flanks of the fire are holding well and appear to be highly effective. Crews continue to patrol and look for hotspots on these edges. Connecting and strengthening the line on the northwest portion of the fire will remain a primary focus today.

Publication Type: Announcement
Fire personnel have completed ignitions at the Masterson Prescribed Burn, accomplishing 30 acres of burning on Wednesday (May 21) and an additional 115 acres on Thursday (May 22).
Klamath National Forest personnel were joined by the Smith River Hotshots from the Six Rivers National Forest, Mendocino National Forest Engine 352, an engine and a squad from Quartz Valley Indian Reservation, CAL FIRE SKU Engine 2671, and a crew from MP Forestry to fire and hold the burn. An unmanned aerial system (UAS, or drone) was utilized throughout the burn to assist with ignitions as well as patrol the fireline using infrared technology.
Resources are back out at the burn today, and will be for several days, patrolling lines and mopping up.
Residual smoke will remain in the area for a couple days as fuels within the prescribed burn consume.
The Masterson Prescribed Burn is directly adjacent to residences and is part of a network of fuel reduction efforts by the Klamath National Forest, developed in collaboration with partners, to help protect homes in the area from future wildfire events.
